Characteristics of Viña Pomal Reserva

Viña Pomal Reserva is a classic wine from D.O. Rioja made by Bodegas Bilbaínas. The first vintage from Viña Pomal was in 1908. This wine has been adapted to new times but without losing the essence of its origin.
This wine is a single variety Tempranillo (100%) grown in the Viña Pomal estate, located on the town of Haro, between the Ebro and Tirón River.
The vines are planted in gravelly limestone soils with low fertility.
The climate in this area is Mediterranean continental characterized by low rainfall, especially in summer, and the temperature contrast between winter and summer.
As for the production, there is a long marceration with a destemming and squeezing.
There is an alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, afterwards, they transfer and clarify the wine before passing it into the barrels.
Viña Pomal Reserva rests for 18 months in American oak barrels. During this period, they carry out 2 or 3 rackings to clarify wine naturally.
Finally, prior to being released onto the market, the wine rests two years in bottle.
Serve at 17.0ºC

Tasting notes Viña Pomal Reserva

It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
Viña Pomal Reserva 2013 is a mature, round and balanced wine. This vintage reveals an excellent balance between maturity and freshness. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruit stand out with refined toasted notes from its ageing. In the mouth, it is silky, pleasant and very long.
A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
Sight Ruby colour with red brick reflections. Clean and bright.
Nose On the nose there are red fruit aromas with notes from the aging like spices, tobacco leaves and vanilla. Taste On the palate it is soft, round and balanced. This wine has body and a pleasant acidity.
Sight Beautiful and intense ruby red colour with light maroon reflections and light brick red edges. Nose Clean, high intensity nasal aromas in which the notes of red fruit stand out mixed with hints of cherries in liquor, tobacco, notes of undergrowth and sweet spices. Complex and seductive aromas. Taste In the palate, this is a clean, crispy, classic and well bodied red wine, with a good acidity and a ripe and very pleasant tannic sensation. Long and persistent finish.

    Imágenes y situación D.O.Ca. Rioja

The century-old Bodegas Bilbaínas were born with a French heart and were established with a Riojan spirit. Bodegas Bilbaínas is the oldest bottling firm in La Rioja. It is the winery with the largest surface area of underground caves ("calados") in the whole region (3,400 m2). It also has the most extensive area of vineyards in the municipality of Haro. Since the beginning, the winery has been defined by its deep knowledge of the territory and the care in the production of its single-vineyard wines. These are extremely identified with the plots where they came from, hence their names: in 1911 Viña Pomal was created; in 1921, Viña Zaco; in 1923, the white wine Viña Paceta; and the range was extended in 1994 with La Vicalanda reserva, a distinguished and expressive wine that was born from the 9-hectare farm, selected in the vineyard area of Viña Pomal.
