Characteristics of Viña Pomal Garnacha
Viña Pomal Garnacha is a red wine made by Bodegas Bilbaínas.
This wine from the Q.D.O. Rioja is made 100% with Grenache grapes from a selection of very old vines, grown in calcareous soils in high regions, on two estates, one in La Rioja Baja and the other in La Rioja Alavesa.
It goes through a cooling before maceration, and the fermentation and maceration are both very short, amounting to a total of 10 days. 50% of the wine goes through the alcoholic fermentation in French barrels, staying on its lees for the whole of its ageing. The rest ages for 10 months in 1 year old American oak barrels.

Viña Pomal Garnacha 2015 is a juicy red wine, with structure and freshness. A very good vintage that shows us all the character of the variety. Intense on the nose, fresh red fruit, with notes of orange peel and light toasted notes from its ageing. In the mouth, it is soft, with volume and a fresh and lingering finish.
A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.

The century-old Bodegas Bilbaínas were born with a French heart and were established with a Riojan spirit. Bodegas Bilbaínas is the oldest bottling firm in La Rioja. It is the winery with the largest surface area of underground caves ("calados") in the whole region (3,400 m2). It also has the most extensive area of vineyards in the municipality of Haro. Since the beginning, the winery has been defined by its deep knowledge of the territory and the care in the production of its single-vineyard wines. These are extremely identified with the plots where they came from, hence their names: in 1911 Viña Pomal was created; in 1921, Viña Zaco; in 1923, the white wine Viña Paceta; and the range was extended in 1994 with La Vicalanda reserva, a distinguished and expressive wine that was born from the 9-hectare farm, selected in the vineyard area of Viña Pomal.
