Characteristics of Verónica Ortega Cal Blanco
Verónica Ortega Cal Blanco is a white wine produced by Verónica Ortega in Valtuille de Abajo (León) D.O. Bierzo.
Verónica Ortega , natural from Cádiz and trained in the best wineries of Burgundy and Priorat, was attracted to the terroir of El Bierzo. She decided to settle in Valtuille de Abajo to start to produce her own wines, thus initiating her most personal project.
Verónica Ortega mainly works with old Mencía vineyards using organic precepts. Vinification is carried out traditionally, with spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts and low amounts of sulphites. Wines that are faithful to the terroir, with character and a great personality.
Verónica Ortega Cal Blanco is a wine made with Godello from a vineyard planted on a plot that is over 30 years old, located on top of an old limestone mine with calcareous soils, in San Juan de la Mata.
They are manually harvested and placed in 15-kg boxes. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they are destemmed and subjected to a light skin-contact maceration. They ferment with native yeasts in French oak barrels and 800-litre amphorae, where the wine remains for 11 months.

Verónica Ortega Cal Blanco 2018 is a profiled wine with aromas of ripe white and tropical fruits on a mineral background. On the palate it is flavoursome, sharp and austere. A surprising, very Atlantic white with lively acidity, a long mid-palate and a delicious salty finish.
Extreme weather included low rainfall and summer drought with high temperatures resulting in an unusually early harvest. The most important weather events occurred on April 28th with a late frost that destroyed the crops of El Bierzo valley, and also the hailstorm that fell days later on May 9th, which destroyed part of the vineyards on the slopes of Corullón. The harvest was brought forward to unusual dates due to the high temperatures. Some winegrowers started to pick grapes the last days of August. The wines of this vintage have a good balance between structure and acidity. The fast ripening of the grape caused a small decrease in acidity that makes the wines accessible from the first vintage.
Verónica Ortega Cal Blanco 2016 is a still, deep and mineral white wine. Only 1000 bottles of this second vintage of this fantastic wine. On the nose, aromas of ripe white fruit stand out, with floral notes and a slight smoked touch of its ageing. In the mouth, it is vertical and very fresh.
Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity. Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
