Characteristics of Vall del Calàs

Vall del Calas is a red wine from Montsant produced by Celler de Capçanes, a winery initially a cooperative that was founded in 1933 through the union of several families who lived in Capçanes. Formerly selling wines in bulk until 1991, when the winemaker Angel Teixidó joined the winery, the first wines were produced in barrels.

The climate in this area is Mediterranean but with continental influences. The mountains act as a natural barrier against the influence of the winds from the sea. This climate is characterized by an important contrast between day and night, summers are hot and dry and winters are cold. This wine is a blend of grape varieties Merlot (50%), Grenache (35%) and Tempranillo (15%). The grapes come from vineyards with cooperative members, Merlot ranges from 8-12 years of age and Merlot 30-60 years. Merlot vineyards are planted 550 metres above sea level and are the latest variety that is collected, allowing perfect ripening of the grapes. Regarding the development, after the manual harvest, vinification of each variety is performed separately. Malolactic fermentation begins in tanks and ends in the barrel. Finally, Vall del Calas spends 12 months in new French oak barrels and 3 months in tanks before bottling.

Sight

Ruby red with purple trim.

Nose

The nose is intense, and woody notes appear alongside liquorice. Notes of ripe red fruit accompanied by spices, balsamic and roasted notes. Memories of plums, cinnamon and cocoa. Subtle mineral background.

Taste

The palate is warm, fleshy and pleasant, leaving an intense fruity sensation. Good balance between tannins and acidity. Long finish.

Sight Intense ruby red colour with purple edges and abundant, even and slow-falling tears on the glass. Nose Initially, a great aromatic intensity is felt with wooden and alcoholic notes being projected.  Gradually, a variety of aromas ranging from notes of very ripe red fruit to spicy, toasted and balsamic hints is released. Some hints of liquorice, plums, cinnamon and cocoa are also noticed along with intense mineral notes. Taste A warm and fleshy attack gives way to a long, pleasant mid palate, leaving intense fruity sensations.  Good balance between the tannins and acidity, bring liveliness to the set. Long and persistent finish with an aftertaste of tasty red fruit.

Sight Intense cherry colour with purple reflections. Good tears that stain the glass. Nose Intense, complex and concentrated aromas. Its abundant expressive notes of ripe fruit intermingled with lots of spicy notes, elegant toasted and smoky aromas are released along with a touch of vanilla, coffee and cocoa. It has an attractive balsamic background with a light herbal touch.
Taste Elegant and serious wine, that will make us enjoy. It is elegant, very nice and tasty. Its notes of ripe fruit are perfectly balanced with the fully integrated toasted aromas. It has an excellent acidity and a long and persistent finish that leaves a smoked and sweet fruity flavour.
Sight Deep red color. Nose Complex aromas of ripe fruit, very spicy, vanilla ... very intense and concentrated. Alcohol is perfectly balanced with vibrant acidity. Taste Enjoy an elegant sweetness and a good tannic structure.

Winery Celler de Capçanes

Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. The wines, mostly reds, are typically made with Grenache and Carignan grapes and are authentic, wild and artisanal. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
