Characteristics of Vall del Calàs
Vall del Calas is a red wine from Montsant produced by Celler de Capçanes, a winery initially a cooperative that was founded in 1933 through the union of several families who lived in Capçanes. Formerly selling wines in bulk until 1991, when the winemaker Angel Teixidó joined the winery, the first wines were produced in barrels.
The climate in this area is Mediterranean but with continental influences. The mountains act as a natural barrier against the influence of the winds from the sea. This climate is characterized by an important contrast between day and night, summers are hot and dry and winters are cold. This wine is a blend of grape varieties Merlot (50%), Grenache (35%) and Tempranillo (15%). The grapes come from vineyards with cooperative members, Merlot ranges from 8-12 years of age and Merlot 30-60 years. Merlot vineyards are planted 550 metres above sea level and are the latest variety that is collected, allowing perfect ripening of the grapes. Regarding the development, after the manual harvest, vinification of each variety is performed separately. Malolactic fermentation begins in tanks and ends in the barrel. Finally, Vall del Calas spends 12 months in new French oak barrels and 3 months in tanks before bottling.

The nose is intense, and woody notes appear alongside liquorice. Notes of ripe red fruit accompanied by spices, balsamic and roasted notes. Memories of plums, cinnamon and cocoa. Subtle mineral background.

The DO Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, The DO Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
