Characteristics of Valdelana Reserva
Valdelana Reserva is a red wine produced by Valdelana, in the D.O Rioja.
The winery Valdelana is a family run business, the fruit of a long viticulture history that dates back to the 16th century when the family acquired its first lands in El Ciego (la Rioja Alavesa).
Valdelana Reserva is produced from the varieties Tempranillo (95%) and Graciano (5%). The vineyards grow in calcareous-clay soils with high amounts of chalk, which gives rise to its low yield of grapes.
In addition, being south facing vineyards and possessing a microclimate that protects the fields from the harsh northerly winds from Sierra de Cantabria produce a concentrated grape low in water.
For production, Valdelana Reserva is aged for 24 months in French (50%) and American (50%) oak barrels. After the time spent in the barrel, Valdelana Reserva rests for a further 12 additonal months in bottle.
