Characteristics of Val de Paxariñas Capricho

Capricho de Val Paxariñas is a white wine from Bierzo produced by Bodegas Gancedo. This wine is a blend of Godello (85%) and Doña Blanca (15%).

The grapes come from strains of about 20 years old in the case of Godello and 60 in the Doña Blanca. The first variety grows in glass, while the second in trellises.

The soils are sandy and the vineyards which give rise to Capricho de Val Paxariñas are low-density, about 3000 vines per hectare. Production is therefore limited, one or two kilos per strain. Viticulture and winemaking are made using traditional methods.

Processing and finishing Capricho de Val Paxariñas takes place in stainless steel tanks.

Juani y Ginés are a pair of winemakers who are responsible for the cellar. The passion and pride with which they work allow them to achieve, year after year, some worthy wines are born.

Tasting notes Val de Paxariñas Capricho

Extreme weather included low rainfall and summer drought with high temperatures resulting in an unusually early harvest. The most important weather events occurred on April 28th with a late frost that destroyed the crops of El Bierzo valley, and also the hailstorm that fell days later on May 9th, which destroyed part of the vineyards on the slopes of Corullón. The harvest was brought forward to unusual dates due to the high temperatures. Some winegrowers started to pick grapes the last days of August. The wines of this vintage have a good balance between structure and acidity. The fast ripening of the grape caused a small decrease in acidity that makes the wines accessible from the first vintage.
A vintage where the Atlantic climate has ruled over the continental.  The lightness of this type of climate, together with the perfect sanitary condition of the vineyard, has given rise to an excellent vintage from this area.  The year began with typical temperate and rainy winter weather.  What differentiated the year was the intense rains that fell between the months of April and May, conditioning the vegetative development of the vine.    The summer was then noticeable for being warm and dry, the perfect combination for the perfect grape.
The 2015 vintage was characterised by low rainfall. The lack of water throughout the year brought the vegetative cycle of the vine forward and it was not until days before the harvest that it started to rain considerably. This caused the grape to hydrate and lead to a somewhat fresher vintage than what it initially seemed. The continental character that this vintage looked like it was going to have was mitigated by the rain before the harvest, balancing the phenolic ripeness, qualifying the vintage as excellent. The wines of this vintage have an excellent balance between structure, acidity and texture in the mouth. A vintage that can age perfectly.

Lots of fresh fruit (white stone, tropical and citrus fruit) it perfectly matched with floral aromas. Light herbal notes and subtle spices. Elegant mineral background. Very Atlantic. Sight Pale yellow with waxen edges. Clean and bright wine with unctuous tears. Nose Intensely aromatic wine with lots of notes of fresh fruit (white fruits, stone fruits, tropical fruit and citrus). When it opens up, herbal notes are displayed with strength providing the wine with a good freshness. Milky and delicate spicy hints are also noticed on its elegant mineral background. Taste Good and intense attack with a tasty, smooth and very fresh mid palate. Its notes of fruit and herbs gain in intensity, although they stay very balanced. Marked but pleasant acidity and a very nice good finish. A different, very suggestive and rich wine.
Sight Straw yellow colour. Clean and bright. Thin tears. Nose Intense and elegant aromas. Wide range of fruit notes (apple, pear, apricot and some tropical fruits) on a powerful, herbal and creamy background. Subtle mineral touch. Taste Powerful and tasty palate, fresh and with a creamy mid palate. Balanced. Elegant and pleasant finish, with a hint of bitterness and a herbal aftertaste. Bierzo white wine with character.
Sight Straw color. Nose Complex nose, with aromas of pear, apple and citrus. Taste In the mouth, collecting first the residual carbon from the fermentation, then a very balanced acidity, alcohol, fatty, tasty, persistent ... something different.

    Production area D.O. Bierzo

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
