Characteristics of Ultreia Mencía

Ultreia Mencía is a red wine produced by the winery Raúl Pérez in D.O. Bierzo. 
This winery is a personal project of the renowned oenologist from León, Raúl Pérez. Since he worked in the winery Castro Ventosa, which caused a true revolution in El Bierzo, Raúl Pérez has not stopped. His latest wines Ultreia "ir más allá" reveal a career in constant evolution.
Raúl Pérez make wines almost in a traditional way. Wines that are very expressive, powerful and elegant at an affordable price. Among them, Ultreia de Valtuille, with 98 Parker points, is probably the most prestigious one.
Ultreia Mencía is made with 100% Mencía. The grapes come from different plots of old vineyards distributed between the towns of Valtuille de Abajo and Sala de los Barrios (León). Among the varieties of soils where the vineyards are planted, the clayey soils prevails, followed, to a lesser extent, by stony and sandy ones.
For the production of this wine they perform long macerations, with little extraction, of the bunches with the stems, as well as fermentation in wooden foudres.
After the wine is made, Ultreia Mencía is aged for 12 months in second- and third-use French oak barrels. Finally, this wine is not filtered nor clarified when it is bottled.
Ultreia Mencía is a synonym of passion and quality. A renowned and well-valued wine at an incredible price.

Tasting notes Ultreia Mencía

Ultreia Mencía 2017 is a red wine with very marked varietal aromas on the nose, where there are also notes of aromatic herbs, gorse and low mountain areas, as well as hints of quark cheese with blackberries. On the palate it is juicy and enveloping, a fresh and balanced red wine, with an inviting youthful character.
A vintage where the Atlantic climate has ruled over the continental.  The lightness of this type of climate, together with the perfect sanitary condition of the vineyard, has given rise to an excellent vintage from this area.  The year began with typical temperate and rainy winter weather.  What differentiated the year was the intense rains that fell between the months of April and May, conditioning the vegetative development of the vine.    The summer was then noticeable for being warm and dry, the perfect combination for the perfect grape.
Ultreia Mencía 2015 is a juicy and complex profiled red wine. With this vintage, this wine once again defines the Mencía and the terroir precisely. Intense on the nose, with ripe black fruit and with elegant herbaceous notes that are slightly spicy and mineral. It has a sweet entry on the palate, is lively and balanced with a fresh and lingering finish.
The 2014 vintage was characterised by a marked Atlantic climate. The rains and the cold in autumn prevailed, leading to a somewhat warmer than usual winter. Spring started mildly, with a two-week delay in budding and the rains were sporadic, with a total water accumulation of 1,000 mm that gives the vintage its Atlantic character. In July and August, temperatures rose and rainfall was scarce, leaving the grapes to ripen in an excellent way and giving the vintage a little more structure. At the end of August, they suffered high temperatures, and in September, the traditional rains made the harvest quite difficult. The wines of this vintage are characterised by their great complexity. A wine with an Atlantic and fresh character and a structure provided by the warmer end of cycle. Wines with a long life ahead.
The 2013 vintage was characterised by the influence of the Atlantic climate. Autumn and winter were the typical ones of El Bierzo, with abundant rainfall and low temperatures. Spring came in the same way, with some hail that destroyed crops in some places and lead to the delay in flowering. Summer did not make much of an appearance either, with low temperatures, ripening and the growth cycle were quite slow. The harvest date was delayed by 3 weeks.The wines of this vintage are characterised by a thin profile. The Atlantic climate left its mark on these lighter wines with a marked acidity. Ready to be stored.
Sight Red cherry. Clean and bright, with a thin tear. Nose

It has a complex nose. Red and black fruits, cherries and strawberries with varnish, soft vanilla and roasted notes.

Taste Entry is greedy, very tasty and powerful. Tannins are well polished. Long finish.
Sight Dark picota cherry colour with violet tones and a purple rim. Clean and bright. Fine, slow-falling, slightly tinted tears show on the glass. Nose Intense, clean and complex nose. At first we find aromas of ripe black fruit combined with herbal notes and unergrowth, which gradually give way to mineral touches, spices, pepper, vanilla, lactic notes and fine roasted notes. Taste Appetising attack. Fresh, tasty and very fruity on the palate with a good acidity and nice, ripe, noticeable tannins. Balanced and expressive. A fruity aftertaste with floral and mineral notes felt at retro-olfaction. Surprisingly drinkable.
Sight Cherry color with purple hues, very intense. Nose Intense aromas of ripe red fruits, flowers, balsamic and mineral notes. Taste Delightful entry, with fresh acidity and a certain nerve. Large final with red fruits and tannins.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
