Characteristics of Ultreia de Valtuille

Ultreia de Valtuille is a red wine made in Bierzo by one of the greatest winemakers and winegrowers of the moment- Raul Perez.

Ultreia de Valtuilleis a red wine of very limited production, its first vintage held great international acclaim. "Ultreia" was the greeting that formerly used by pilgrims who were on the road to Santiago. It is a Latin word which today would translate as "forward" or "continue". Ultreia de Valtuille is a single variety of Mencia old variety made with grapes from a single farm, "The Villegas" located in the small town of Valtuille. It is an estate of just over 1 hectare of old vines, planted in 1908, on a calcareous clay soil with lots of sand on the surface. It is located at 530 metres above sea level and has an Atlantic-continental climate, which is cold yet with a relatively moderate climate as it is an area located halfway between the land and the coast. The wine production is done without much intervention. Fermentation takes place in vats. After the fermentation, there is a long maceration and extraction. Ultreia de Valtuille spends 14-15 months aging in French oak barrels used for wine. Once matured, it is bottled without filtering or clarification. Raúl Pérez is a connoisseur of the Mencia variety, with Ultreia de Valtuille one of his masterpieces.

Tasting notes Ultreia de Valtuille

Ultreia de Valtuille 2015 is a complex, expressive and profound wine. An excellent vintage, revealing all the personality of the Mencía variety naturally, and the character of the terroir where it originates. Powerful on the nose, with ripe black fruit and with spicy and slightly toasted notes. On the palate it is juicy, with minerality and a fresh and lingering finish.
The 2014 vintage was characterised by a marked Atlantic climate. The rains and the cold in autumn prevailed, leading to a somewhat warmer than usual winter. Spring started mildly, with a two-week delay in budding and the rains were sporadic, with a total water accumulation of 1,000 mm that gives the vintage its Atlantic character. In July and August, temperatures rose and rainfall was scarce, leaving the grapes to ripen in an excellent way and giving the vintage a little more structure. At the end of August, they suffered high temperatures, and in September, the traditional rains made the harvest quite difficult. The wines of this vintage are characterised by their great complexity. A wine with an Atlantic and fresh character and a structure provided by the warmer end of cycle. Wines with a long life ahead.
The 2013 vintage was characterised by the influence of the Atlantic climate. Autumn and winter were the typical ones of El Bierzo, with abundant rainfall and low temperatures. Spring came in the same way, with some hail that destroyed crops in some places and lead to the delay in flowering. Summer did not make much of an appearance either, with low temperatures, ripening and the growth cycle were quite slow. The harvest date was delayed by 3 weeks.The wines of this vintage are characterised by a thin profile. The Atlantic climate left its mark on these lighter wines with a marked acidity. Ready to be stored.

The nose has a great intensity. Black and red fruits, balsamic, roasted flavours, milky undertones and minerals.

Taste

Stylish, tasty and fresh. With great presence of fruit on the palate, polished tannins and good acidity.

Winery Raúl Pérez

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
