Characteristics of Turó de les Abelles
Turo de les Abelles is a red wine from the Penedès, prepared by Finca Viladellops.
The winery is located in the region of Garraf, in the small rural town of Viladellops, in the municipality of Olèrdola (Alt Penedès). Vines have been cultivated in this area for many years.
Turo de les Abelles is a blend of Grenache (50%) and Syrah (50%). The Grenache grapes come from a plot called the Turo de les abelles (Mount of bees) with stony and calcareous soils, the Syrah grapes come from a vineyard with many marine fossils in the soils.
The vineyards are situated at 250m above sea level and ecological cultivation methods are employed, certified by the Catalan Council of Ecological Agricultural Production.
The development of Turo de les Abelles begins with a manual harvest in boxes of 15kg. The grapes undergo a pre-fermentation and maceration in open barrels at a temperature of 10-12°C. Then the juice ferments in barrels at a temperature of 23-25° C.
Finally, the wine is aged for 24 months in French oak barrels.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
Viladellops Winery The winery is located in the town of Olerdola in the province of Barcelona in particular in the Garraf massif at an altitude of 250 meters, with calcareous clay soils. It is characterized primarily by its short production dedicated solely to the domestic market.
