Characteristics of The Glenrothes Alba Reserve
For the production of Glenrothes, a combination of Spanish and American oak barrels formerly containing sherry, bourbon or malt whisky are used. Glenrothes Alba Reserve is different. Glenrothes whiskies are aged in American oak refill Bourbon barrels, which add aromas of coconut and vanilla with notes of smooth crème brulée.
The Glerothes distillery has been producing malt whisky for over 130 years. It was founded in 1879 in the Scottish town of Rothes, Speyside, widely hailed as the cradle of single malt whisky.
Ripe, plump Scottish barley is used to produce this whisky. It is steeped in clean water, laid out, turned, left to germinate and later dried in a kiln. The liquid obtained is later cooled for fermentation, yeast is added, and two days later a fermented must is obtained.
Later, the spirit is distilled by being heated twice in traditional, tall-necked copper stills. The vapours rise and are condensed to obtain a spirit of which the 'middle cut' is used. The heart of the spirit is a little over 17-19 percent of the total liquid obtained. Finally, the alcohol content is reduced without ageing and it is left to age in oak barrels.
