Characteristics of The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Years
The Balvenie Single Barrel is a 15 year old single malt drawn from a single traditional oak whisky cask of a single distillation. While each cask is slightly different, The Balvenie Malt Master selects only the casks which have the essential characteristics of The Balvenie Single Barrel, particularly honey, vanilla and oak notes. Each bottling is part of a limited edition of no more than 350 hand-numbered bottles - thus each bottle is unique.
The Balvenie is located in Dufftown, Speyside (Scotland). The distillers still grow their own barley in the same way they always have. The only concession they make to the 21st century is the use of a combine harvester when the crop is ready. The Balvenie is the only distillery that maintains and operates a working floor malting in the Scottish Highlands.
After soaking the grain in spring water sourced from the hills above the distillery, the grains are spread across the malting floor. The distillery employs its own coppersmith, who helps maintain the stills, which, because of their shape and size, strongly influence the taste of the Balvenie. The casks also play a vital role in the taste of the whisky. That is why their preparation and maintenance is entrusted to an on-site team of coopers. The Malt Master, David Stewart, is the person responsible for ensuring that each whisky is the best combination of wood, distillation and time.
