Characteristics of Thalarn

Thalarn is a red wine from the Costers del Segre region produced by Castell d’Encús, a winery established in 2001 by Raül Bobt, the man behind the famous Ferrer Bobet. Raül Bobet has very clear philosophy when it comes to wine making, based on the maximum care of the vineyard and the grapes, with a passion, dedication and maximum respect for nature. The Castell d’Encús winery does not use any herbicides or pesticides for their agriculture.

The area is home to a continental climate, characterised by a noticable contrast in temperature between day and night. Average annual rainfall stands at around 300 to 450mm.

Thalarn is made using only Syrah (100%) grapes, which are taken from the wineries own estate in the municipality of Talarn, in the small town of Pirineo. The vinyards lie around 850 to 1000 metres above sea level, higher than any other vineyard in Spain. The vineyards are planted on calcareous soils which are low in organic matter.

As for the winemaking process, after the harvest has been carried out, boxes of a 10kg capacity are used to transfer the grapes to the winery. Following this the wine is fermented in different materials; in wooden vats, stainless steel tanks and stone vats. This is to achieve nuances and a greater aromatic complexity. Later the wine undrgoes maolactic fermentation in French oak barrels for 12 months.

The wine is neither clarified nor filtered. We reccomend that you decant this wine before serving in order to appreciate its aromatic power.

Tasting notes Thalarn

Sight Clean and very bright wine with a spectacular violet colour and purple reflections. Abundant tears. Nose Complex and intense. Its initial notes of flowers give way to aromas of fresh red fruit, spicy notes of clove and mainly white pepper, typical of cold weather grapes. Taste In the palate, this red wine is silky and delicate but dynamic. Its soft tannins are very pleasant and it shows a great acidity. Finish of fresh fruit, spicy notes and undergrowth. A round, appealing, feminine and delicious wine. It will develop all its complexity in the bottle.

Winery Castell d'Encús

When we refer to the DO Costers del Segre we think of wines with a continental character, which in some respects is true, but extensive replantation of international grape varieties means that the majority of wines produced here lack a geographical or territorial trademark, even though the vast majority of the wines are technologically perfect. However, there are currently wineries such as Mas Blanch i Jové, Costers del Sio, L’Olivera, Lagravera and Thomas Cusiné, among others, who concentrate their effors on producing wines with what are considered varieties native to the region. However, the majority of this region is still dominated by classic international varieties.
