This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July.
The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time.
The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
