Szent Tamás Mád is a single-variety Furmint dry white wine produced by the Szent Tamás winery, in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region, Hungary.
Szent Tamás Mád is made from a selection of Furmint variety clusters from up to 26 different plots of the town of Mád. The grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature in order to preserve and enhance the variety’s aromas and freshness that appear in the resulting wine. The Furmint variety is also able to perfectly express the minerality of the terroir it grows in.
The Szent Tamás (Santo Tomás) winery is located in one of the best growing areas in the town of Mád, with soils composed of volcanic particles that give the wines a characteristic personality that has become the winery’s hallmark.
Tokaj is a region that has gained an international reputation for its extraordinary sweet wines made from grapes affected by “noble rot”. At present, young winemakers like István Szepsi Jr, who runs the Szent Tamás winery, are focussing on dry white wines because they consider that the Tokaj terroir offers the perfect conditions to make extremely high quality dry wines, as well as sweet wines.
