Today, Masía Vallformosa stands out as a winery that produces quality wine products, where the philosophy of tradition and the necessary modernity go hand in hand to offer wine lovers the commitment of honest business principles.
Many may think that Vallformosa is a new winery, but in reality, what is now Vallformosa was created by Francisco José Doménech with the cultivation of vineyards in the middle of the 18th century. With Francisco, the first expansionist impulse started and if would set the tone for later generations. The children and grandchildren of the founders continued their agricultural and winemaking activities, they expanded the underground wineries and cavas, acquired selected vineyards, incorporated the best technical advances, and continued to produce wines with the same passion as their ancestors. At a certain point of its recent history, the heritage of this winemaking legacy passed to José Doménech Torné, an experienced man whose business astuteness, organisational skills and a certain sense of risk, led him to produce the first bottles of Cava Vallformosa in the 1930s.
History of the winery
It all began in 1905, when José Doménech Torné bought all the vineyards of the farmhouse called ‘La Sala’, recovered from the phylloxera, although the winery did not open until 1938. It is obvious that, over the years, many things have changed in Masía Vallformosa. But not the most important ones. Now, the saga continues, and with a clearly rejuvenating air and a spirit full of dreams yet to be materialised, the Doménech-Vidal family continues to be committed to controlling the quality of the raw material used to produce its wines and cavas. In 1974, the Doménech-Vidal family bought new vineyards and the farm Masia Freyé, a place of retreat and source of inspiration for the Doménech-Vidal family. In 1993, a major expansion of a new winemaking plant with a capacity of ten million kilograms of grapes was carried out. In 2000, the facilities of ‘La Sala’ were extended with three new bottling lines.
Currently, the winery Masía Vallformosa, surrounded by its own vineyards, is located in the area known as Masía La Sala, in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedés. The winery remains faithful to the meaning of its name: Valle Hermoso (beautiful valley). The winery is now one of the most modern ones in the country, and has nearly 400 hectares of vineyards strategically distributed in 9 farms or sites of land in the Penedés, at different altitudes, on different soils and with varied microclimates. A total of 14 grape varieties are grown in these farms, including traditional white and red varieties from the area, and a wide collection of noble and international varieties.
Vallformosa is a company that is aware of the environment and proactive in improving the environmental management derived from its activity. In fact, it led the implementation of environmental measures and was one of the first companies in the sector to install its own biological wastewater treatment plant. On the other hand, Vallformosa uses low-density bottles (lighter than the traditional ones), as it saves raw materials and also reduces CO2 emissions during transport, both from the glass in the production plant to the final consumer.
Vallformosa has modified the wine storage system to reduce the environmental impact generated during the ageing process of the cava. The new system used plastic trays that increase the useful life of the separators and thus reduce the generation of waste such as cardboard (-15%), glass (-29%) and plastic (-11%). Additionally, the improved bottle layout achieved with the new system reduces the number of breakages during the ageing process.
On the other hand, through its Foundation, Vallformosa is firmly committed to raising funds for the fight against cancer. In fact, for every bottle of cava that is sold, Vallformosa contributes to associations around the world that fight cancer. To give visibility to this charity initiative, each bottle of cava has one of the 6 special caps that have been designed with the logo of the associations receiving the aid and with the motto of the initiative: ‘Drink with elegance, act responsibly’.
