When we speak of the origins of the Naveran farm, we have to trace back to the 11th century, a date testified by the Romanesque chapel that is still there. However, if we want to refer to the beginning of their winemaking tradition, we must approach the 19th century, when Pablo Parellada de Naveran, of noble origin, and upon his return from Argentina in search of his fortune, married the daughter of the Marquis of Naveran, lord of Guernika, and bought the farm where the family would settle. When the phylloxera was over, Mr Pablo replanted the farm with vines of the Montonec variety –now known as Parellada, in memory of its name. Over time, it would become essential in the production of cava. Then, he started the wine business at the same time as he built a winery that is still partly preserved today.
Mr Pablo is followed by his daughter, Antonia Parellada. With the help of her husband, René Guilleron, a Swiss national, she encouraged their son Michel, the current owner of the winery, to modernise and maintain the spirit and family character of the winery’s founders. However, it was not until 1985 when Michel printed the name Naveran on the labels of his wines. From this date onwards, the winery gradually experienced a rise in marketing, and started to develop what is nowadays one of the exemplary wineries of the modern Penedés, without excessively taking refuge in conservative traditionalism.
History of the winery
The wineries and cavas Naveran were founded in 1984 by its current Managing Director, Michel Gillieron Parellada de Naveran, a graduate in Oenology from the École d’Ingénieurs de Changins (Switzerland). Determined to promote a project rooted in the land of his ancestors, he has wanted to preserve the traditional and family character that his wineries always had.
Michel is a kind man, melancholic of his childhood in this farm, an entrepreneur and advanced in knowing the winemaking possibilities of the region of Penedés.
The wineries are located on the farm Can Parellada, one of the largest properties in Alt Penedès, with 110 hectares, near Sant Martí Sadevesa, in the municipality of Torrelavit. The winery was designed under the concept of a small ‘chateau’, and has a family farmhouse and several buildings, which house wineries, underground warehouses for ageing, and product storage.
Some of the details that support this well-deserved success in the national and international market are the consecutive awards and mentions obtained in national and international competitions.
The wineries have a capacity of one million litres, in stainless steel deposits, and 500 French barrels made of oak from Limousin. Its annual production is of around 500,000 bottles, where 50% are Cava and the other 50% are still wine.
The uniqueness of the farm’s terrain, which is characterised by its natural gradients and the predominance of slopes with a slight inclination, favours the cultivation of the grapes, which receive the beneficial influence of the sun most of the day. The winery has 115 hectares of its own vineyards, which guarantee the supply of the necessary grapes for the production of all its wines. In the vineyards of Can Parellada they cultivate the white varieties of Penedès, like the Maccabeu, Xarello and Parellada, apart from other white varieties like Viognier and Chardonnay, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) and Merlot.
Faithful to the traditional philosophy of their ancestors, the growth and quality of the vines is taken care of with a personalised attention to the grape bunches, guaranteeing a perfect degree of ripeness. Naveran treats its vineyards with strictly organic methods. They do not use herbicides; only organic fertilisers. On the other hand, if there is excess rain, the grapes are left to fall off to ensure the quality of the harvest. In the continuous search for maximum quality, they also vouch for innovation.
