Characteristics of Sonsierra Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada

Sonsierra Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada is a red wine produced by the winery Bodegas Sonsierra in San Vicente de Sonsierra, D.O.Ca. Rioja.

 

Bodegas Sonsierra was born in 1962, when more than 240 vinegrowers from San Vicente de la Sonsierra decided to create a cooperative where they could produce their own wines. This was the first cooperative in La Rioja to market its wines indicating the origin of each on the label.

Currently, Bodegas Sonsierra controls 516 hectares of their own vineyards, all of them belonging to their partners. These are planted with vines that go from 20 to 130 years old on average, distributed in 1500 small plots. Deep soils, mainly clayey-calcareous, planted only with native varieties. These vineyards are clearly influenced by a unique microclimate: mild temperatures all year round, with moderate rainfall, a good temperature difference between day and night in the ripening season, an excellent ventilation of the vines thanks to the winds that blow 80% of the days, and their South orientation with a certain tilt of the vines, favouring the plants' exposure to sunlight.

 

Sonsierra Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada is a wine made from Tempranillo, from old vines that are over 40 years old, located on the foothill of the Sierra de Cantabria.

The harvest is performed by hand. Once it arrives at the winery, and after a slight crushing, it goes through a pre-fermentation maceration for 48 hours. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel deposits for 8 days at a temperature (max. 28ºC) with periodic pump-overs. Once it has ended, it goes through post-fermentative maceration for 48 hours. The malolactic fermentation takes place in concrete deposits. The ageing takes place for 12 months in new used French and American oak barrels. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 12 months.

 

Sonsierra Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada is an intense, elegant and original wine. A powerful nose gives it complexity beyond the wines with a similar category. A great discovery.

Tasting notes Sonsierra Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada

It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
