Characteristics of Solar de Líbano Reserva

Solar de Líbano Reserva  is a red wine from DO Rioja, made by the Castillo de Sajazarra winery, located in the municipality of Sajazarra, in the highest part of the Rioja Alta.

The winery is built beside a castle surrounded by gardens that, during the 60s and 70s, produced grapes. The winery, the castle, the gardens and vineyards constitute an "authentic chateau". The vineyards are grown at an altitude of 540-680 metres. Due to their proximity with the Cantabrian sea, about 85 kilometres this area has a more Atlantic influence. The low rainfall is about 600 litres per year, well distributed throughout the year and with snowfall during the winter.

Solar de Líbano Reserva is made from 98% Tempranillo and 2% Graciano and Garnacha. The wine spends 2 years in barrels of American oak, the first year in new oak and the second in oak four years old. After 3 months of aging in wooden vats, it goes into the bottle, where it remains for about 12 months before marketing.

This is a classic-cut, traditional Rioja.

Tasting notes Solar de Líbano Reserva

It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
Solar de Líbano Reserva 2013 is a mature, balanced and elegant red wine. A good vintage of a classic wine from Rioja. Elegant notes of aging take center stage, giving way to a finish with ripe red fruit. On the palate it is balanced, silky and lingering.
2010 was considered the perfect vintage after some very good years. An optimal growth cycle, without incidents regarding the health of the vineyards. The harvest took place during a magnificent state of the vines and with a moderate production, with good fruit setting and slow ripening. A great year with excellent ageing potential, which resulted in spicy and fruity wines, with a very good structure and acidity.
Sight Cherry, middle layer, with purple hues and garnet rim. Clean and bright. Nose  Balanced flavours. Juicy red fruits are prominent. Slight floral notes and earthy memories complete this wine.  Taste Good attack, its journey on the palate is markedly fruity, fleshy and juicy. Good acidity, defined and integrated, mature and pleasant tannic sensation. Long finish.
Sight Pretty picota cherry colour. Medium-robe. Violet reflections and maroon rims. Clean and bright. Nose Medium-intense nose. Balanced aromas. Juicy red fruit mixes with notes from its ageing. Light floral notes and earthy hints complete the set. Taste This wine shows good attack with a fruity, juicy, fleshy and at times liquorice palate. Defined and well-integrated acidity. Ripe and enjoyable tannins. Long and persistent finish.
Sight Cherry color, middle layer and poorly developed. Garnet rim.
Nose Intense and comple, integrating the ripe fruit (jam, red plum), with liquorice aromas typical of Tempranillo and vanilla and coconut, which are a true reflection of the excellent contribution of the wood. Taste Medium-bodied wine, powerful, with ripe fruit palate with a nice, round, sweet tannins and a finish marked by the wood. It is long and pleasant to drink.
Sight Color cherry, middle layer and undeveloped. Nose Intense aroma and complex, integrating the ripe fruit (compote, red plum), with licorice aromas characteristic of tempranillo and vanilla and coconut, which are a true reflection of the excellent contribution of the wood. Taste Medium bodied wine with a pleasant mouth passage and round, sweet tannins and an end marked by the wood. Long and pleasant to drink. He came to eat or drink only very Rioja.

Imágenes y situación D.O.Ca. Rioja

As in all European countries, many Spanish wines owe their reputation to the efforts of some traditional families and some large companies that have kept two basic requirements: quality and personality. This family companies have managed to gather their own heritage that allows them to make wine “at home” with quality assurance. An example of this is the winery Castillo de Sajazarra. Since its beginnings in the early 70s of the last century, it has made wines with their own seal, and with the inimitable style of La Rioja Alta.
