Characteristics of So de Tardor

So de Tardor is an organic monovarietal Xarel·lo white wine from the D.O. Penedès produced by Vins So de Tardor.

Vins So de Tardor is the new project by the founding partners of the avant-garde music festival Primavera Sound. The winery’s first vintage to go on the market was the 2017 one. It enjoys the collaboration of the oenologist Anna Baqués, who has also worked in Can Ràfols dels Caus and Mas Oller.

The vineyards for So de Tardor are in the Alt Penedès. They were planted in 1959, are trained in bush-form and are cultivated organically. Their yield is low, but they produce a balanced and concentrated grape, perfect for vinifying. They are manually harvested into 20kg boxes to respect the grapes as much as possible and to ensure that the bunches reach the winery as complete as possible.

So de Tardor is fermented at a controlled temperature in order to preserve and extract the pleasant aromas that Xarel·lo offers. Lastly, once vinified, half of the wine is aged on lees in two-year-old French barrels for two months. The slight ageing on lees gives it a little more volume and complexity. The total production is very limited, amounting to 2,980 bottles.

So de Tardor is a fresh white that is fruity and with a touch of lees. As a curiosity, it should be pointed out that the wine label has been illustrated by Ana Ayala, who has also made a host of designs for the Primavera Sound festival.

Tasting notes So de Tardor

So de Tardor 2018 is a young wine that is fresh and exciting. On the nose, aromas of white fruit such as San Juan pears and green apple stand out. On the palate it is elegant, unctuous and complex, with a slightly acidic freshness, but at the same time smooth and persistent.

Designation of Origin D.O. Penedès

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
