Characteristics of Sierra Cantabria Crianza

Sierra Cantabria Crianza is a red wine from the Rioja region, and is produced by Bodegas Sierra Cantabria. This wine is made from only Tempranillo (100%) grapes, a variety the region is known for.
The grapes are taken from vineyards situated in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida.

The harvest of the grapes is carried manually, with bunches being selected at the vinyard before being placed on a selection belt at the winery. After, the grapes are destemmed and fermented at a controlled temperature between 25º- 28ºC using indigenous yeasts from the vineyards themselves.

Sierra Cantabria Crianza then macerates with the skins still intact for 16 days with 2 daily pumpings. Following this, the Sierra Cantabria Crianza ages for 14 months in American and French (from bordeaux) oak barrels, with rackings taking place every 4 months.

Sierra Cantabria is owned by the Eguren family, who over 5 generations have dedicated themselves to viticulture and agricultura. They relation with wine dates all the way back to 1870.

Tasting notes Sierra Cantabria Crianza

High summer temperatures define this vintage. After a mild winter with very little rainfall, spring began with a great deal of rain, which provided favourable conditions for the growth cycle of the vines. During the summer, they experienced very high temperatures and the absence of rain, which resulted in very healthy vines. As a general result, this was a balanced year, where the final absence of rains led to a good concentration of grapes. This year is noted for a vintage with volume that can be enjoyed as a young wine.
Sierra Cantabria Crianza 2015 is an intense, tasty and expressive red wine. This vintage further enhances the fruit above the toasted notes of its ageing. In the mouth, it is easy to drink, sharp and with a long and quite fresh finish.
It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
This vintage was marked by a very rainy and cold spring just at the time of the growth cycle. This fact caused it to ripen unevenly and with a certain delay. Thanks to a fairly dry September and October, the grapes that ripened with a certain delay were harvested in a selective manner. A complicated vintage, but with good results since there was an exhaustive selection of the grapes. A good balance between concentration and acidity in their youth define the wines from this vintage.
A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.
Nose
Sight Nice ruby red colour. Medium-high intensity with light orange reflections in the edge of the glass. Clean and bright. Nose Medium-intensity nasal aromas but still very expressive. Once the wine is aerated, abundant notes of red fruit, spices, roasted and toasted aromas are released, along with some hints of chocolate and light milky nuances. Taste This wine is tasty on the palate with ripe tannins and a good balance between the acidity and the alcohol. It has a very fruity character which stands out among the other flavours (toasted, roasted, cocoa and vanilla) and provides the wine with a very interesting complexity.
Sight Pretty ruby red colour with light orange glimmers on the edge of the glass. Medium-high intensity. Clean and bright. Nose Medium-intensity nose but very expressive. Once the wine is oxigenated, abundant notes of red fruit, spices, roasted and toasted notes appear, along with a hint of chocolate and some lactice nuances.  Taste On the palate this wine is tasty and has ripe tannins, with a good balance between the acidity and the alcohol. It has a notably fruity character, which prevails over some lovely toasted and roasted notes of cocoa and vanilla, resulting in a very interesting and complex wine.
Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Bright cherry red colour with subtle orange edges. A wine with a medium-high robe and thin tears. Nose Very expressive wine. On its intense and fleshy notes of red fruit, some toasted and spicy aromas are noticed which gain in intensity and takes over the fruit aromas. When it opens up, the wine becomes more spicy and balsamic and a milky touch is noticed along with a subtle minerality and hints of scrubland. Taste Very tasty, fresh and very nice red wine with a silky, light and smooth mid palate. It is full-bodied and shows notes of fruit, with a touch of liquor, slightly more noticeable than on the nose. Good acidity and integrated tannins. Good finish.
Sight Light ruby â??â??red with orange reflections. Medium intensity. Clean and bright. Good tears. Nose Intense aromas. The notes of fruit and wood are very balanced and they complement each other. The aromas or red fruit are noticed along with milky, spicy (black chocolate, vanilla and a subtle touch of pepper) and good toasted notes. Taste Tasty and very friendly wine. Embracing attack with a silky texture. Its notes of ripe red fruit and licorice dominate slightly over the toasted and roasted aromas. Several notes of complex spicies (vanilla, cloves, cocoa) are also noticed. Sweety and ripe tannins. Good lingering finish.
Sight Color pillorying upper middle layer. Nose little red fruit compote with a touch of wood highly integrated with the fruit.
Taste Tasty, with notes of cherry liqueur, touches of marmalade, very good balance fruit-wood.

Imágenes y situación D.O.Ca. Rioja

The winery Bodega Sierra Cantabria is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a village with a great winemaking tradition in the hear of La Rioja. The winery belongs to the Eguren family. A family that has been making wine for five generations in La Rioja, and with projects in other Denominations of Origin, such as Teso la Monja winery in D.O. Toro. The wines of Sierra Cantabria are wines with a classic Rioja style. They try to provide somewhat more modernity, leaving the wood in the background and making the fruit and the intensity stand out.
