Characteristics of Sierra Cantabria Amancio
Sierra Cantabria Amancio is a red wine made by the Viñedos Sierra Cantabria winery, located in Sierra Cantabria in Rioja.
The Viñedos Sierra Cantabria winery is owned by the Eguren family, a family of great wine traditions for the last 5 generations, also responsible for other well-known wineries like Teso La Monja in Toro. Amancio is a red wine made from Tempranillo grapes from a single farm at the end of "La Veguilla" in the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It is located in 15 hectares of vines between 20 and 35 years old, which are pruned and kept in trellised glass. The soil is calcareous with clay and stones on the surface, which is fertilised only using organic materials. The vineyard yields a very low production, but with a wonderful grape quality. Harvesting is done manually and moved to the winery in small boxes. A rigorous selection of grapes is completed, focusing on structure, health and maturity. The selection is so strict that only about 8% of bunches harvested are actually used. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, grains are also then selected. Due to such rigorous selection, the winery production is little. However, the result is a perfect and consistent grape which ensures a wonderful wine. The selected grapes are de-stemmed by hand before undergoing a cold maceration for 6 days. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, grapes are trodden daily for the first 6 days. Once the fermentation is complete, the grapes are left to macerate for 21 days with their skins before maturing over 24 months in French oak barrels. Racking occurs every 4 months. Amancio is an excellent red wine, the carefully selected grape ensures excellent quality. We recommend decanting at least two hours before enjoying.
