Characteristics of Santiago Ruiz Albariño

Santiago Ruiz Albariño is a young white wine made by Santiago Ruiz with the Albariño, Treixadura, Godello, Loureira Blanca and Caíño Blanco varieties in the D.O. Rías Baixas.

Santiago Ruiz is considered the father of Albariño for being the first to bottle and sell Galician wines made with this variety. He inherited this project from his maternal grandfather and has been adapting it over the years to fit in with today’s world. The original winery, a 17th-century building near the mouth of the Miño River, sits alongside a new 21st-century building in the town of Tomiño. Two clear examples of his desire to unite tradition and modernity.

Santiago Ruiz Albariño comes from a 38 hectare south-facing vineyard lying at an altitude of 50-75 metres above sea level. The strains are aged between 15 and 20 years old planted in sandy-loam alluvial soils with a granite base. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, the harvest is carried out manually by variety in 20 kg boxes.

Once they reach the winery, the Santiago Ruiz Albariño grapes are classified on the selection table. Then each variety is fermented separately at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks for 21 days. It then ages on lees before the final coupage is made.

Considered one of the fathers of Albariño, Santiago Ruiz has created a white wine with an intensity, freshness and complexity that is so typical of the O Rosal style.

Tasting notes Santiago Ruiz Albariño

Santiago Ruiz Albariño 2018 is an aromatic white wine with a complex nose of white fruits and mineral and herbaceous touches. On the palate it is intense, fresh and sweet with dominant citrus notes.
The 2017 vintage has been distinguished by the excellent health of the vineyard and the intense heat. Winter and spring were warmer than normal, accelerating the growth cycle 15 days and which was prolonged during summer, bringing forward the date of the harvest to the end of August. The growth cycle went smoothly, with good flowering and no notable pests. In summer, the drought worsened and in August they began to see symptoms of dehydration in the bunches. However, rains at the beginning of September restored the balance of the vineyard. The wines of this vintage are identified by having something more volume due to its warmth and great freshness. A vintage to enjoy young, or as it is the norm for great wines of the area, to save for a few years.
Sight Pale yellow colour with greenish reflections. Very bright and clean wine. Nose Very rich wine with a great variety of fruits, such as apples, stone fruits and tropical fruits typical of its varieties. Its herbal notes provide it with a great freshness. Taste Very fresh and light in the mouth with intense fruity notes and a very good acidity. Good finish with a good persistence.
Sight Pale greenish yellow, very bright.
Nose Excellent rich aroma where aromas of white fruit and citrus, with notes of fresh herbs and balsamic touches.
Taste Very fresh on the palate, balanced body and acidity, tasty and very persistent.
Sight Pale yellow with green hues, clean, very bright. Nose Very aromatic with tropical fruit and floral memories, developing complex aromas and exquisite bottle phase. Taste Very fresh on the palate, balanced acidity in body i, tasty and very persistent.

Designation of Origin D.O. Rías Baixas

    Winery Santiago Ruiz

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
