Characteristics of San Román

San Román is a red wine from Toro produced by Bodegas Maurodos.

Leading this winery is Mariano García, a winemaker known for producing Mauro together with the prestigious Vega Sicilia winery, where he was also responsible for the development of 30 legendary vintages of their wines.

San Román is a varietal Tinta de Toro, a typical variety from Toro. The grapes come from different vineyards planted with old vines 45 years old at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level, with stony and sandy-clay soils.

The climate is an extreme and continental with very little rain, lots of sunshine and strong thermal contrasts between day and night, which favours the correct ripening of the grapes. Each plot is vinified separately.

San Román spends 24 months aging in barrels of French and American oak that are renewed by 20% with each vintage.

San Román is a deep, powerful and elegant Toro wine. A wine with a long history of aging in bottle.

Tasting notes San Román

San Román 2016 is a mature red wine with aromas of ripe red and black fruits, violet flowers, mineral notes and hints of liquorice over a dry ground background. On the palate it is fruity, deep and voluminous. It has fine and well integrated tannins. The finish is elegant and lingering.
This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
San Román 2014 is a concentrated, powerful and elegant Toro wine. This year is distinguished by the good ripening and acidity of the grapes. A muscular wine, where the black fruit stands out with the spices of the Tinta de Toro and those of the barrel. The months it spends in barrels round this wine and give it finer tannins. Ideal to drink now or to save for a few years.
The 2013 vintage, rated as a very good one, began in a complicated way. In the early spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there were heavy rains, significantly delaying the start of the growth cycle. This resulted in late flowering and therefore later ripening. Before the harvest, there was a considerable amount of rain, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they have produced are less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with a good acidity.
Sight A nice dark cherry colour. Abundant tear. Nose A very fragrant and expressive wine. Aromas of red fruits with black fruit, cinnamon, snuff and memories of toasted wood. Taste
Sight Pretty dark picota cherry color with violet reflections. A high robe, clean and bright with a wide, large and slow tear. Nose A red wine with an expressive and intense nose in which ripe red fruit aromas are detected. Little by little, as it opens it gives off blue and violet flower notes. The fruit gets darker and is accompanied by a wide range of spiced and toasted aromas. A background of mineral notes that gradually gain intensity. A rich nose that is full of nuances. Taste A powerful attack followed by a tame finish. A significant amount of fleshy, juicy fruit with highly integrated and well defined acidity as well as ripe and succulent tannins. A long and persistent finish. An enjoyable wine.
Sight Beautiful dark cherry colour with violet reflections. Clean and bright, high robe wine with beautiful thick and dense slow-falling tears. Nose It is a red wine with expressive and intense nasal aromas in which the notes of ripe red fruit are noticed at the beginning. As it opens up, some notes of blue and violet flowers are noticed and the notes of fruit are gradually turned into black fruit aromas. A wide range of spicy and toasted aromas are also noticed. Some mineral notes are noticed in the background which gradually gain in intensity. A rich nose, plenty of nuances. Taste In the mouth, this red wine shows a powerful attack and becomes increasingly polished in the mid palate. It has a high load of juicy and fleshy notes of fruit, a very integrated and crispy acidity and a ripe and succulent tannic sensation. Very long and persistent finish. An enjoyable wine.
Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Cherry colour with purple reflections. Good robe. Abundant and slow tear. Nose Good aromatic intensity. Many notes of red fruit (with some subtle hints of liqueur) that come along with soft creamy touches and herbal and minerals nuances. Taste Large, concentrated and meaty are the three adjectives that define San Román 2007. Tasty, dense and velvety palate. Good presence of fruit. Fine tannins. Deep wine. Long trajectory in the mouth. Very long and very persistent finish.
Sight Intense cherry colour with burgundy trims. High layer. Clean wine with a dense and abundant tear. Nose Intense, powerful and deep aromas. From the beginning, the notes of ripe black fruit are dominant on a very mineral background with hints of chocolate, coffee and snuff with some touches of cream and toasted. Taste Fresh, intense and elegant. Wide and full attack. Tasty mid palate with a dense and silky texture, good presence of fruits and fine notes provided by the oak. Polished ripe tannins. Very intense and expressive wine with a long and very persistent finish with a mineral aftertaste.
Sight Cherry color very intense. Nose Deep nose and concentrated, pronounced fruity notes of fine aging. Taste Juicy and balanced, surprising freshness of its tannins and long in the mouth.

Designation of Origin D.O. Toro

Winery Maurodos

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Toro

Maurodos is probably one of the first wine projects that showed the extraordinary potential of the vineyards and wines of Toro. Maurodos, popularly known by its brand San Román, the name of its most emblematic wine, carries the signature of Mariano García, one of the most respected oenologists in Spain. He worked thirty years as the technical head of Vega Sicilia, before he started his own projects: the first one in Ribera del Duero with Bodegas Mauro in 1980, and a few years later, in 1997, in Toro, with Maurodos, where he has 100 hectares of vineyard, planted mostly with the variety Tinta de Toro and Grenache.
