Characteristics of Rumbo al Norte
Rumbo al Norte is a red wine made by Comando G in la Sierra de Gredos, the south of the Ávila province. Comando G is a project with the intention of recuperating single plots of Grenache variety in order to produce wines with maximum expression from each one. Hence the name Comando G. G for Grenache. Rumbo al Norte is a single variety Grenache. The grapes are grown in a very little plot with just over 0,3 planted hectares at an altitude of 1200 metres and north facing. Cold. Very cold in winter and very warm in the summer, however the nights are fresh as well. The ripening of the grapes occurs slowly, following a good balance between the sugar and the acidity. Wines with great degree but hardly noticeable on the palate. Comando G practices agriculture based on the principle of biodynamic, demonstrating an absolute respect for the environment. The grapes are destemmed and macerated at a cold temperature. Rumbo al Norte undergoes a fermentation in open barrels and an aging, for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels. An expressive Grenache. Wonderful. If you would like to try it, hurry! This wine is in limited production. They only make a little more than 1000 bottles.
This great year has given us the opportunity to enjoy one of the most impressive places in Comando G: almost half a hectare planted with ancient Grenache vines at an altitude of 1,200 metres. This wine is an homage to the Atlantic and mineral purity of the wines. A delicate wine in colour and aroma but that has a special hold over the palate. An austere texture that will grow with the years. One of the greatest Grenache wines in the world.
SightAn intense ruby red colour with light violet tones. Clean and bright, medium-robe. Fine, quick-falling, slightly-tinted tears show on the glass.NoseA clean, medium-high intensity nose. Intense aromas of red fruit stand out, which gradually give way to very balanced, complex aromas. Toasted aromas, floral notes, spices, intense balsamic notes, aromatic herbs, earthy nuances, and an elegant mineral background. TasteIn the mouth, like in the nose, this wine is complex and elegant. It shows powerful attack, and the palate is covered with the same red fruit from the nose, now somewhat liqueur-like, complimented by intense toasted notes, a good acidity and very noticeable tannins. It's long and persistent, with powerful smoky notes and minerals at retro-olfaction.
For many, Comando G will sound like the name of a cartoons series that was broadcast on Spanish television in the late seventies and early eighties. But in the wine world, Comando G has a very precise interpretation: "G" for Grenache and "G" for Gredos. A project that began thanks to the passion of three young wine enthusiasts whose goal was to produce the best Grenache wine. And they managed to surprise everyone with wines of a marked personality, traditional and modern at the same time, with slight colour, hardly any wood, good acidity. With a fluid texture but persistent, fine tannins, tasty and elegant. Their idea is to make quality wines that reflect the area, the soils, the vintage and the variety.
