Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is a biodynamic monovarietal Nebbiolo red wine from the DOCG Barbarescoproduced by the Roagna winery.
Roagna is a winery in Barbaresco, in the Piedmont area, which cultivates some of the best vineyards in its region. Its principles involve replacing the failures in its vineyards by following the Massale system, using plant material from the vineyard itself to preserve its own genetics. It promotes biodiversity in its plots by cultivating them without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers; fermenting with wild yeasts in wooden vats and performing long macerations. It ages its wines without letting the wood aromas prevail over the fruity ones and does not filter or clarify its wines, and bottle them using the minimum of sulphites possible.
The vineyard for Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is a 0.122 hectare plot located in the municipality of Barbaresco on soils rich in limestone and marl mixed with strata of yellow and red sands. The vines have a minimum age of 50 years and are always harvested by hand. The plot was bought by Giovanni Roagna in 1961.
The grapes for Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti are selected berry by berry, and only those that are in optimal conditions are vatted. They ferment in wooden vats with native yeasts for about 10 days and then the wine remains in contact with the skins for at least two and a half months to extract as many compounds as possible, thereby producing a wine with great ageing potential. Lastly, the wine undergoes a refining ageing for approximately five years in neutral oak barrels.
The production of Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is very limited - approximately 1,000 bottles per harvest.

Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti 2011 is a bright claret-coloured red wine. The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of ripe red fruit, roses and violets, tobacco and refined spices. On the palate it has an intense and deep flavour that is balanced, complex and lingering.
