Characteristics of Reina de los Deseos
Reina de los Deseos is a red wine made by Comando G from Sierra de Gredos, Madrid. Comando G has recovered several old Grenache variety vineyards. Hence the G in its name, G for Grenache. The grapes are grown on old Grenache vines that are cultivated with maximum respect for the environment, following the principles of biodynamic agriculture. The vines are planted at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level, in the mountains in la Sierra de Gredos. They suffer from a difficult climate that helps the grapes ripen in a balanced way. The result? The wines are fresh and elegant. The grapes are destemmed before undergoing a cold maceration. The fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature and aging takes place in French oak barrels for 14 months. This is a wine that has a great Grenache expression. Fresh and very expressive. A marvellous wine of limited production.
This Grenache plot is located near the village of Cadalso de los Vidrios, looking north and at an altitude of 900 metres on white granite soil. The profile of this wine is somewhat more mature than its sister, The Knockout, with an outstanding red fruit acidity.
Although Madrid wines (Vinos de Madrid) are still relatively unknown among consumers, the region has enjoyed a prestige and historical past that dates back to the twelfth century. Current wines in the region however are far from the old wines of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, who in their golden years were perceived as some of the most prestigious wines in Spain. Today, the Vinos of Madrid face a highly competitive wine scene, but the effort local wineries regain this old prestige is evident in the quality of the wines being produced.
