Characteristics of Ramón Bilbao Mirto

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao can be found in the heart of D.O. Rioja, on the outskirts of Haro, one of the most privileged areas for growing grapes in the region.
The winery was founded in 1924 but it was in 1972 that they determined the guidelines for the production of Crianza wines. Currently its hallmarks are the development of high quality wines and innovation, keeping the utmost respect for tradition and history that precedes them.
Ramón Bilbao Mirto 2008 was born from a selection of the best Tempranillo grapes grown on vines more than 70 years old. After the selection of the bunches, the fermentation takes place in small oak vats at a controlled temperature and it passes through French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place without racking, only with battonage.
The wine is aged for 24 months in Allier French oak barrels after which it is bottled without being filtered.
It is a magnificent red wine with great personality and modern style.

Tasting notes Ramón Bilbao Mirto

A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
2010 was considered the perfect vintage after some very good years. An optimal growth cycle, without incidents regarding the health of the vineyards. The harvest took place during a magnificent state of the vines and with a moderate production, with good fruit setting and slow ripening. A great year with excellent ageing potential, which resulted in spicy and fruity wines, with a very good structure and acidity.
Sight Dark cherry red in colour with purplish meniscus. High and very cloudy layer that has an abundance of dense tears that fall slowly and in uniform. Nose It is complex and intense on the nose. Ripe red and black fruits combine perfectly with spicy aromas, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and, thin but powerfully smoky and toasty notes. Background of floral notes, herbs and minerals.
Taste It has a powerful attack, with a taste that permeates the mouth with fruity, lactic, spicy and sweet sensations. Firm, ripe, defined tannins and an excellent acidity that refreshes and predisposes the second drink. Long and persistent finish. Elegant.
Sight Bright and very opaque violet colour. Nose Intense aromas in which the notes of very ripe red fruit stay in the background under a large set of notes provided during the ageing, which range from toasted and smoked touches to the noticeable hints of spices. An intense and fresh balsamic background is also noticed. Taste The wine goes through the palate showing multiple layers that show the efforts of integration of fruity notes provided by the Tempranillo and the subtleness of the ageing in oak. It persist in the palate and leave a fresh and juicy sensation that brings back the fruits noticed at the first taste.
Sight Bright and very opaque pomegranate colour with purple hues. Nose Its wide aroma palette drives us from the black berrties, across the smoked wood and toasted bread to the nutmeg. In the mouth its soft and elegante texture yet blunt and  powerful. Taste The wine develops in multiple layers tthat show the effort of integration between the Tempranillo fruit and the subtleness of the oak ageing. It remains in the palate leaving a fresh and juicy imprint that brings back the fruits from the first taste.
