Characteristics of Raimat Abadia

Raimat Abadia is a red wine produced by the wineryRaimat in Raimat (Lleida), within D.O. Costers del Segre.

Raimat is the second project of Codorniu Grup, owned by the Raventós family.

The building of the Raimat winery dates back to 1918. Joan Rubió i Bellver, who was a disciple of Antoni Gaudí, projected what was then the first building constructed with reinforced concrete in Spain. This building was given the name of the ‘cathedral of wine’.

At Raimat, they currently practice a sustainable viticulture, to achieve high-quality products, minimising the use of agrochemical products, reducing waste and optimising production methods through the full integration of the available resources.

Raimat stands out from the beginning in the field of oenological research. Over 30 wine research projects confirm this winery as a true reference at a European and global level.

Raimat Abadia is a red wine made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo from their own vineyards.

Harvested at night, both varieties are vinified separately. As soon as the grapes reach the winery, they go through pre-fermentation maceration for 24-48 hours at 15°C, and then they are fermented in stainless steel deposits, where they also go through the malolactic fermentation. This wine is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels of different sizes.

Raimat Abadia is a linear, elegant and balanced wine. On the nose, aromas of ripe black fruit with marked toasted notes stand out. In the mouth, it is clean, with structure and a generous finish.

    When we refer to the DO Costers del Segre we think of wines with a continental character, which in some respects is true, but extensive replantation of international grape varieties means that the majority of wines produced here lack a geographical or territorial trademark, even though the vast majority of the wines are technologically perfect. However, there are currently wineries such as Mas Blanch i Jové, Costers del Sio, L’Olivera, Lagravera and Thomas Cusiné, among others, who concentrate their effors on producing wines with what are considered varieties native to the region. However, the majority of this region is still dominated by classic international varieties.
