Characteristics of Quinta da Muradella Berrande
Quinta da Muradella Berrande is a red wine made by Quinta da Muradella in Verín (Orense), D.O. Monterrei.
Quinta da Muradella is a project by José Luis Mateo, a simple, honest winemaker with 4 hectares of vineyards planted with native varieties in his 'Quinta'. He started this journey in 1991, in an attempt to understand all of the varieties in his surroundings. For this reason, he joined Raúl Pérez in 2000, and together they started to see all of the opportunities and possible blends in each of the varieties.
Their philosophy is based on demonstrating all of the characteristics of the landscape through native varieties, which are the best to be able to express the land. To this end, they use organic viticulture, without chemical products such as fertilisers, herbicides or treatments against diseases, following the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.
Quinta da Muradella Berrande is a 100% Mencía wine, planted 700 metres above sea level, on steeply sloping slate soils.
Quinta da Muradella Berrande ferments with its natural yeast in open stainless steel tanks with a third of the whole grape stems. The wine ages for 10 months, and in stainless steel for 10 more months. It is bottled without being filtered of clarified.
Quinta da Muradella Berrande is a full-bodied, deep and balanced wine. The notes of ripe red fruits are fused with pepper and liquorice. Its playful acidity lengthens the sweetness of the ripe fruits.
The Monterrei Valley is often only considered for the cultivation of cereals, fruit trees and other horticultural products, but the Valley is today one of the most dynamic regions in terms of wine production. The transformation and improvement of viticulture and the installation of wineries such as Terra de Gargalo (owned by Roberto Verino), Pazos del Rey, Quinta do Muradella, Lobazán and Valdevellos, among others, have contributed to increased production of quality wines within designation of origin, which are becoming ever more present in the main Spanish markets.
Quinta da Muradella, in Verín, within D.O. Monterrei, has a name of its own, José Luis Mateo, a genuine vintner by vocation, and a producer of great finesse and authenticity. In less than a quarter of a century, he has placed his small farm in the valley of Támega at the top of the best Burgundy-inspired properties. Their red and white wines rub shoulders with the greatest.
