Characteristics of Pujanza Cisma

Pujanza Cisma is a single-variety Tempranillo red wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

In the village of Laguardia, in the heart of the prestigious Rioja Alavesa area, lies Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza. This winery was established in 1998 with the aim of showcasing the intrinsic qualities of their own vineyards. These are Tempranillo and Viura vineyards, cultivated using a combination of traditional knowledge and the strictest quality controls. In the winery, all wines are aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months. This results in wines with great Rioja personality.

Pujanza Cisma is a very limited production wine that comes from a single 0.8 hectare plot, with clayey and deep soil, lying at more than 600 metres above sea level. These are old vines planted in 1925 with very low yields but great concentration in each grape. Traditional agriculture is used, the grapes are harvested manually and individually selected.

After destemming and a light cold maceration for 5 days, the Pujanza Cisma must macerates and ferments in 1,700 kg French oak tanks. Finally, it ages in new French oak barrels for a minimum of 16 months and rests in the bottle a few more months before being released for sale.

Pujanza Cisma 2007 is the flagship wine of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza. A wine full of Rioja character that is made with all the tradition and expertise of a world-famous denomination.

Tasting notes Pujanza Cisma

It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
Pujanza Cisma 2007 is a mature wine with intense aromas of ripe black fruit and delicate touches of smoke, spices and incense. On the palate it is bold but without ever losing the freshness of acidity, nor the elegance of tannins. This is a wine with a clear Rioja character. It is balsamic and mineral with a great aging potential.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
2010 was considered the perfect vintage after some very good years. An optimal growth cycle, without incidents regarding the health of the vineyards. The harvest took place during a magnificent state of the vines and with a moderate production, with good fruit setting and slow ripening. A great year with excellent ageing potential, which resulted in spicy and fruity wines, with a very good structure and acidity.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with purplish reflections. Very covered. Clean and bright. Nose Intense and complex aromas. When it is opened, it shows a fantastic ripe red and black fruit, fine toasted aromas, spices and balsamic and mineral nuances. Taste In the mouth, this red wine is large, fleshy, tasty, with an excellent acidity and plenty of fruit. Structured wine, with a powerful, elegant and high tannic sensation. Long and extremely persistent.
Sight Intense cherry colour with violet reflections. Clean, bright and well covered wine elegant tears. Nose Intense, complex and very seductive aromas. Initially, very expressive and tasty notes of red and black fruit are released mixed with elegant toasted aromas and a wide range of creamy spices along with subtle animal notes (leather) and herbal hints on a great background of mineral and balsamic nuances. Taste Intense, powerful and embracing wine with a wide, excellent attack. The aromas felt on the nose return in a very expressive, tasty and full-bodied palate. It has a long and silky mid palate with elegant, very well integrated tannins and a very good acidity. Perfectly balanced and estructured wine with a very long and persistent finish.  Definitely, one of the greatest wines from Rioja.

Pujanza has a name of its own, Carlos San Pedro, a caste winemaker who carries the genes of a line that goes back four generations in his vocation for wine. His most immediate aim was to change the style, search for the terroir, and make a series of unique wines with very limited productions from sites with exceptional features that mark the personality of each one of their wines. With his youthful enthusiasm he has known how to connect with the contemporary consumers, creating harmonious wines, balanced in their essential combination of fruit and ageing, deep and elegant, with the purist style of Rioja Alavesa.
