Characteristics of Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica

Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica is a white wine from the D.O Rueda region produced by the Protos winery. This wine is made using only Verdejo grapes.

The grapes used for Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica come from vineyards that are over 25 years old

The grapes used for Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica come from vineyards around 25 years of age that are part of the 1,400 hectares of land that the winery has spread around the Douro River. The climate in summer is dry and hot, easily reaching temperatures above 30 degrees, and cold during the long winters, in which they can reach -18. It is in short a Mediterranean climate with strong continental influences.

The harvest is carried out using small boxes with a 20kg capacity, which ensure that the grapes do not break on their way to the winery. y durante la noche, aprovechando el frescor del momento para que la uva llegue en las mejores condiciones a la bodega.

On arrival at the winery, the best grapes are selected at a selection table. After, they undergo maceration for about 4-5 days at around 10ºC. Following this, fermentation takes place in new french oak barrels.

Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica then ages in french oak barrels on its lees for 6 months. During this time frequent battonages occur.

Protos is a renowned winery, founded in 1927, which specialises in the production of white wines. They opérate in the D.O Rueda and D.O Ribera del Duero region.

Tasting notes Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica

The 2017 vintage has been rated excellent by the regulatory council. A year marked by drought and high temperatures that brought the harvest date forward. Autumn began with temperatures somewhat higher than normal but with a normal rainfall. It was not until late November when temperatures dropped. The beginning of the year arrived with low temperatures and scarce rainfall. Suddenly, temperatures began to rise and accelerated the growth and phenolic development of the vines. At the end of April, there was an intense frost, a severe climatic accident that reduced the harvest by 20%. Once again, May registered very high temperatures that sped up the flowering and consequently brought the harvest date forward, becoming the earliest to date. A vintage where all the aromatic components of the grape have been extracted and the acidity has been preserved, essential to give freshness to the wine.
The 2016 vintage, rated as very good, began with an autumn and winter with high temperatures for these seasons that predicted an acceleration of the vines’ growth cycle. At the beginning of the spring, temperatures fell and rainfall returned to normal figures. This fact was translated in an adjustment as far as budding and flowering dates. At the beginning of June, the heat arrived and stayed all summer until the beginning of the harvest. In general terms, it was a rainy and somewhat warm year. The wines of this vintage are characterised for being aromatic and with a good acidity. Where wines in their youth will preserve their aromatic and fresh features.

Designation of Origin D.O. Rueda

Winery Protos

When we talking about the Rueda wines, we are often referring to their white wines. The white wines produced in this region are often made with the Verdejo variety, the main variety of Rueda, planted along the Douro River and its tributaries. Rueda white wines often offer lots of floral notes, scrubland low, delicate aromas and a great acidity given by strong temperature differences between day and night. Apart from white wine, Rueda also produces red wine, often made with the Tempranillo variety.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Rueda

La Ribera del Duero tells us a story about an ancestral tradition that goes back to the 9th century, and which was already used my the monks of the Order of the Cistercians. A story about farms and terroirs, a large winemaking kingdom that has its roots back in the Middle Age, and whose imprint it hidden in the essence of its villages, its villas and its castle, Castillo de Peñafiel, on the of the most important fortresses of the region. Still preserved in the inside of the castle is the ageing winery of Protos, the first winery in the area, alongside Vega Sicilia, that sold bottled Ribera del Duero wines.
