Characteristics of Protos Gran Reserva

Protos Gran Reserva is one of the classic wines in D.O. Ribera del Duero made by Bodegas Protos in the town of Peñafiel, Valladolid.
Bodegas Protos is a historic winery. It was the first winery that began the production of wine in the Ribera del Duero, in 1927.
Protos Gran Reserva is made with the grapes from Tinta del País, grown on old vines more than 60 years old.
The vines are planted in mainly calcareous sandy loam soils which are not very fertile, in plots close to River Duero.
It encounters a Mediterranean climate with continental climate influences. Dry summers with a lot of heat, in contrast to the very cold winters.
There is also a difference in temperature between the day and the night which can be transferred to the long ripening of the grapes, a lot of concentration of tannins and colour.
The harvest is done by hand, applying a selection of the bunches in their vineyards. The grapes are transported to the winery in small 20kg crates.
Once in the winery, there is a second selection of the first bunches in order to finish the selection of the best grapes.
Protos Gran Reserva undergoes a 24 month aging in oak barrels and a stay for 36 months in the bottle.

Tasting notes Protos Gran Reserva

Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
Sight Cherry colour with garnet rim. Bright. Fine tear. Nose Complex on the nose with many nuances. Red and black fruit. Tertiary aromas, toasted oak, smoky, vanilla, caramel, spices. Taste On the palate it is velvety, smooth and elegant. Well matured tannins. Warm and friendly. Fruity with good acidity. Very elegant and persistent aftertaste.
Sight Cherry red colour with maroon edge. Medium robe. Bright. Thin tear. Nose Complex nose, full of nuances, in which tertiary aromas are firstly noticed. Intense toasted, smoked, spiced and fine roasted hints which give way to very ripe red fruit, a little strong, accompanied with refreshing balsamic touches. Final reminiscences of the terroir. Taste In the mouth, it is mature, elegant and moderate. It has a soft, embracing and velvety mid-palate. It is a large red wine, with ripe tannins and a correct acidity. Long and persistent finish. Much fruitier than in the nose. A great classic wine.
Sight Picota cherry colour, medium-robe, with maroon rims. Bright. Fine tears shown on the glass. Nose Complex nose, full of nuances. The tertiary aromas are felt first. Intense toasted, smoky, spicy and fine roasted notes gradually give way to ripe red fruit, slightly alcohol soaked, accompanied by refreshing balsamic notes. Earthy touches at the end. Taste In the mouth this red wine is ripe, elegant and discreet with a smooth, full and velvety palate. Ripe tannins and the correct acidity. Long and persistent finish. More fruity that in the nose. A great classic.
Sight Intense dark cherry colour with scarlet touches. High layer. Bright wine with dense slow-falling tears. Nose Elegant, intense and complex aromas. A good load of fruit is noticed along with many aromas provided during the ageing (cacao, toasted, elegant smoked notes and hints of licorice) on an elegant mineral background. Taste Very good, large and bulky attack. Well bodied wine with a velvety, tasty and intense mid palate. Its abundant notes of fruit are very well balanced with the aromas of wood. Balanced and concentrated wine with polished and ripe tannins. It shows a very long and very persistent finish. An elegant and round Gran Reserva wine from Ribera de Duero.
Sight Intense cherry color, full of nuances tile.
Nose Complex nose, aromas of wild fruits (berry, mineral, forest undergrowth and coffee). The senses were seal this bouquet to see how is changing, discovering new sensations as they move the minutes
Taste On the palate is round and velvety, with lineage, noting very fine tannins providing great smoothness and elegance of its vintage. The aftertaste is being smart and tough as they pass through the mouth that senses the memory not easily forgotten.

    La Ribera del Duero tells us a story about an ancestral tradition that goes back to the 9th century, and which was already used my the monks of the Order of the Cistercians.
