Characteristics of Prima

Prima is a red wine from Toro prepared by Maurodos Winery and Vineyards. This wine is a blend of Tinta de Toro (90%) and Grenache (10%).

Prima grapes come from vines between 10 and 35 years old, owned by the winery, growing on clay and sandy soils.

The temperature differences between day and night are great, which gives the wine a great aromatic power.

The two varieties are vinified separately in tanks of different materials, so that the essence of each plot is not lost.

Prima aging takes place in barrels of French and American oak for about 14 months. The barrels are renewed by 20% year on year. The red wines of Bodegas Maurodos look to find excellence in Tinta de Toro, the main variety used by them. The winery has 65 hectares of organic vineyards which produce 2 wines.

Tasting notes Prima

This is an excellent vintage in D.O. Toro. With a somewhat particular autumn due to scarce rainfall and slightly higher than normal temperatures. It wasn’t until early January that the rainfall went back to normal. From February to March, temperatures and rainfall were normal, so the water reserves and the growth cycle began correctly.Budding and flowering were delayed for a few days due to low temperatures in May.The high temperatures start at the end of June, boosting the flowering and growth process. The summer went by without any major weather events until mid-September, when light rains and a drop in temperatures led to a slower ripening until the start of the harvest, which arrived with an optimum degree of ripeness. The wines of this vintage present a great balance between ripeness and acidity. Wines fresh in their youth and prepared to age perfectly.
This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest. As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
Sight Cherry red with garnet hues. Very bright. Nose High intensity, notes of red and black fruits. Spicy and sweet aromas. Taste Wide and powerful entry. Intense and tasty, a long finish of fruit nuances.
Sight Attractive and very dark maroon cherry colour. Bright wine with a high robe and thin tears. Nose Intense, expressive and marked notes of red and black ripe fruit, almost jam, wrapped in elegant toasted aromas and abundant spices quite sweety and creamy, hints of cocoa and bakery notes. A quite perceptible elegant minerality is also felt in the background. Taste Wine with a wide, powerful and embracing attack and a very balanced and structured, intense and tasty mid palate with very expressive notes of fruit and toasted aromas, more noticeable than in the nose, released along with creamy hints. Very good acidity. Noticeable but very nice tannins. Great, long and persistent finish reminiscent of marked fruit.  A very nice, tasty and easy-drinking wine.
Sight Intense and very dark cherry maroon colour. Clean and bright. Abundant and thin legs that stain the glass. Nose Aromatic intensity dominated by the notes of ripe red and black fruitin perfect harmony with toasted and spicy (cinnamon, vanilla) arômas and creamy nuances of milk, bakery and chocolate. Subtle balsamic notes and an elegant mineral background. Taste This modern character wine from Toro has a powerful, intense and wide attack. Very sweet and creamy mid palate with perfectly balanced notes of fruit and wood. Polished and tasty tannins. Good acidity that provides this wine with a good freshness. Very good finish which leaves a persistent mellow feeling. A very nice, tasty and easy-drinking wine.
Sight Intense dark color, very bright. Nose Sweet and fragrant. Lots of red fruit, vanilla and spices like cinnamon, appearing roasted, burnt caramel and subtle notes lactic. Taste Tasty and greedy, structured wine is a serious but easy to drink. With a sweet aftertaste, very fine tannins and subtle oak.

23/10/18 Prima 2016 Just for the first time I drank 2 glasses and the quality is very good. Although I am not afraid of tannins this wine may need two more years of rest to soften things up.

    Winery Maurodos

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.

Maurodos is probably one of the first wine projects that showed the extraordinary potential of the vineyards and wines of Toro. Maurodos, popularly known by its brand San Román, the name of its most emblematic wine, carries the signature of Mariano García, one of the most respected oenologists in Spain. He worked thirty years as the technical head of Vega Sicilia, before he started his own projects: the first one in Ribera del Duero with Bodegas Mauro in 1980, and a few years later, in 1997, in Toro, with Maurodos, where he has 100 hectares of vineyard, planted mostly with the variety Tinta de Toro and Grenache.
