Characteristics of Pólvora

Pólvora is a Trepat variety red wine that the Vins de la Memòria winery produces in the D.O. Conca de Barberà.

Vins de la Memòria is a dream come true for Xavi Nolla, who having seen the life his grandfather lived, decided to make wine as a tribute to all those men and women who suffered in the Spanish civil war. Some of these wines start life in the same fields as the Ebro battle. The name Pólvora is inspired by the constant bombing that the area suffered, leaving the vineyards with traces of iron and gunpowder.

Pólvora comes from a 1.5 hectare vineyard located 410 metres above sea level. The crop is cultivated organically with a limited yield of 6,000 kg per hectare. The harvest is carried out manually at the optimum moment of ripeness.

When the Pólvora grape reaches the winery, it is destemmed, pressed and ferments spontaneously with native yeasts. It then ages for 3 months in 650 litre chestnut foudres. When it is ready, it is bottled without stabilising or filtering, so some sediment may appear over time.

Pólvora is a red wine made with a native variety known for its character and lightness. Two characteristics that are perfectly revealed in this deep red wine.

Pólvora 2018 is a light red wine with an intense nose of red berries, herbaceous notes and touches of black pepper. On the palate it is fresh and broad with great varietal character.

Winery Vins de la Memòria

As with many other Catalonian wine regions, the DO. Conca de Barberà is developing its own territorial identity that over the years has been redefining the personality of the wines and the region, with the help of the red Trepat grape variety. The Trepat grape can be used to produce good sparkling rosés, rosés with character, fresh red wines, as well as elegant blanc de noirs. In just a few years the region and this grape variety have shown their potential, their versatility, and the possibility of carrying out R&D (Research and Development) with them. There are still few wineries who produce single variety wines using this grape, but most importantly, all of them have become aware of the obligation to enhance the uniqueness that defines the territory and the new style of wine to be imposed in the twenty-first century.
