Characteristics of Plop!

Plop! is a red wine from D.O. Bierzo, produced by the Michelini y Mufatto winery.

Michelini y Mufatto is the family project created by the married couple Andrea Muffato and Gerardo Michelini in Bierzo.

Having consolidated their Zorzal winery in Argentina, they came to Bierzo in 2015 with the help of Raúl Pérez and his nephew César Márquez, looking for new areas to produce in. Here they fell in love with Ozuela, a small town with vineyards that were mostly forgotten, but with great potential.

Michelini and Muffato’s wines seek the maximum expression of the terroir, of the native varieties and the influence of the vintage, without neglecting the area’s winemaking tradition. The result is impressive: wines with a great deal of personality and full of Berzian character.

Plop! is a red wine made with Mencía grapes from small plots located on the Camino de Santiago, between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo. Hundred year old vineyards, located mostly on clay and quartz soils.

After harvesting by hand, 30% of the grapes are vinified with whole bunches. After treading, the must is fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, where it remains in contact with the skins for 2 months. The wine is aged for 8 months in clay amphoras

Plop! 2016 Plop! 2016 is a fluid, tender and expressive wine. This vintage highlights all its aromatic potential, with aromas of ripe red fruit and light notes of undergrowth. On the palate it is lively, sincere and with a very fresh finish.

Designation of Origin D.O. Bierzo

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
