Characteristics of Phinca San Julián
Phinca San Julián is an organic, barrel-aged red wine made by Bodega Bhilar with the Garnacha Tinta, Graciano, Tempranillo and Viura varieties in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
Melanie Hickman, an American who spent most of her life in Hawaii, decided to start a new life on the other side of the world. Her destination of choice was Elvillar in the Rioja Alavesa region. There she began working with David Sampedro on his personal project and together they make the Bodegas Bhilar wines. Among their different wine collections, there are three that are sold under the Struggling Vines label. These are unique wines that come from a very special vineyard that Melanie bought with her pension savings before replanting it and naming it after her late dog Hapa.
The grapes used to make Phinca San Julián come from an isolated 0.6 hectare vineyard that lies at an altitude of 646 metres on a steep hill. These are centuries-old strains planted in calcareous soil and facing east. They practice organic cultivation at all times, using biodynamic treatments and work horses instead of tractors. The grapes are harvested manually and placed in 10 kg boxes.
In the winery, Phinca San Julián is partially destemmed and manually pressed. It then ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in open barrels. Once the wine has been made, it ages for 12 months in 225-litre French oak barrels. Finally, only a small amount of sulphites is added before bottling.
Phinca San Julián is quite a rare wine because the production is limited. A wine with a very pure fruit profile and the most elegant balsamic notes.
Phinca San Julián 2017 is a smooth red wine with aromas of red fruit, herbaceous notes and spicy and very balsamic touches. The background reveals hints of orange, lemon and vanilla oils. On the palate it is very fresh, direct, long and lively thanks to the almost citric acidity. The finish is long and direct.
Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
