Characteristics of Pesquera Reserva

Pesquera Reserva is a classic wine from Ribera del Duero. One of the great wines. It is made by Bodegas Pesquera, which today is one of the most valued wineries in Spain.
Its founder, Alejandro Fernández, began making wine when he was a boy with his father, from grapes grown in small vineyards by the family. It was in 1972 when he founded his own winery with a small stone press from the sixteenth century, where he got fine and elegant wines that they served in order to gain worldwide recognition.
Pesquera Reserva is a single variety Tinto Fino, the reigning variety in Ribera del Duero. The grapes are produced in vineyards that are grown in poor gravel and sand soils, planted in low trellises in order to absorb the heat that rises from the ground better.
After the destemming of the grape, it ferments at a controlled temperature between 2 and 3 weeks.
Once the fermentation finishes, there are various pressings before the aging in French and American oak barrels which lasts for 24 months.
After the aging, Pesquera Reserva rests for 12 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
Pesquera Reserva is a wine that can be drunk now, or kept in good conditions for the next 5 years, during which, it will gain complexity and nuances.

Tasting notes Pesquera Reserva

After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
Sight Dark red picota colour; clean and bright. Nose Elegant on the nose. Black berries, currents, toasted notes, vanilla and leather. Lactic notes. Taste On the palate it is a fine and elegant wine with a good acidity. Marked tannins. Long finish.
Sight Dark red ripe cherry colour with garnet edges and a high robe wine. Nose On the nose we encounter forest fruits like blackberries and blackcurrents which become wood, toasted notes, tobacco, liquorice and cocoa. Taste On the palate it is silky with a good structure. Back to forest fruits mixed with some coffee and pleasant mineral nuances. Long finish.
Sight Pretty, deep, dark cherry colour, with violet reflections. High robe. Clean and bright. Elegant, tinted tears show on the glass. Nose Highly intense, aromatic and expressive. Before swirling the glass, woody notes appear that become elegant and creamy once swirled, fusing with seductive roasted notes. Fruity aromas of fleshy, ripe red and black fruit gradually appear. Once opened out, the fruit is joined by a broad set of spicy notes, tobacco, cocoa and intense liquorice nuances. Taste Broad attack, caressing the palate. This red wine is long, silky, dry, intense and elegant. Lots of very fleshy, tasty fruit appears, full of spices and toasted notes. Perfect acidity, integrated and defined. Elegant and very enjoyable tannins. Long, very persistent finish. A great classic.
Sight Dark and deep cherry colour with violet reflections. A clean and bright wine with a high robe and elegant high-coloured tear. Nose Intense and elegant aromas. Before swirling the glass, some wooden aromas are noticed which will become more elegant and creamy as the wine opens up. The notes of fruit appear slowly and progressively. Once it opens up, the notes of fruit become very ripe, as sweet as jam, and very expressive. Thew are mixed with a wide range of spices, tobacco, cocoa and creamy oak aromas that felt again along with delicate but noticeable hints of black pepper. In the background, an expressive minerality is noticed. Taste Very good, intense, wide and embracing attack and a long, tasty and dry intense mid palate with a smooth silky texture. Its meaty notes of stewed fruit become very tasty along with the spices and the toasted aromas, wrapped in a huge creamy smoothness. A wine with a perfect acidity and very nice elegant tannins (for the next year they will still be quite noticeable). Very long and persistent finish with very nice sensations.  A great classic from the region of Ribera del Duero.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with subtle violet trims. High layer. Bright. Good tear that stains the glass. Nose Very intense and warm. The notes of fruit compote appear initially with hints of good wood. When the wine opens up the fruit wins power and the notes of minerals, spices and balsamic appear. Very elegant and expressive. Taste Smooth and wide attack. When it opens up the notes of ripe fruit and wood emerge at its utmost expression, with predominance of the aromas of fruit. Tasty, silky, warm and long mid palate. Very persistent finish. A very elegant wine, round, to enjoy.
Sight Intense cherry red, still maintains a rim purple. High color charge, shown by the extration of color of his tears.
Nose This wine reveals an attractive ripe cherry colour with lively ruby-coloured glints. Clear aspect. Taste This wine's bouquet is outstanding due to the elegance and abundance of its aromatic nuances. There are whiffs of well-seasoned fruit, rich hints of cocoa and vanilla, and reminiscences of minerals. Dark forest aromas can be detected in the background.

Vega Sicilia continued to maintain and grow the myth in the entire world for decades, other wineries, with masterly red wines, fino wines and long-aged wines, awakened the passion of the most expert and renowned international tasters. One of the greatest examples is Alejandro Fernández. The appearance of his Tinto Pesquera in 1975 was a revolution in the world of wine in Ribera. Some of the wines resemble them who made them, and in this case, they are quite right. Tinto Pesquera and Alejandro Fernández have in common a resounding personality, a dazzling style, open, convincing from the first glass. Capable of giving everything it has now and also gaining complexity and nuances over the year
s, without losing its original character. Without any doubt, Pesquera wines have a style that is both special and personal. Some critics, like renowned Robert Parker, have placed them among the best wines in the world.
