Characteristics of Peña El Gato Garnachas Viejas
Peña El Gato Garnachas Viejas is a red wine produced in Rioja by the Juan Carlos Sacha winery in Baños del Rio Tobia, La Rioja.
Juan Carlos Sacha is the person at the helm of the project, with 5.5 hectares of organically cultivated vineyards in the Najerilla valley, La Rioja Alta. He has been one of the driving forces behind rescuing the area’s old varieties and going back to wine growing.
Peña El Gato Garnachas Viejascomes from a 95 year old Garnacha Vieja vineyard 750 metres above sea level on shallow clay-lime soil. On entering the winery, the grape is destemmed and introduced to 500 litre barrels where it ferments and ages for 11 months.
La Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
