Characteristics of Pago la Jara

Pago la Jara is a red wine produced by the winery Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez in the D.O. Toro.

Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez is born from the collaboration between two oenologists, Pablo Eguzkiza and Telmo Rodríguez, with a vast experience in Burgundy and La Rioja.

This "company" makes wines in several Spanish denominations of origin (Málaga, Alicante, Rioja, Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Toro...). In all the areas where it produces wines, the winery always tries to use the local varieties of each region.

The grapes used by Pago la Jara come from the villages of Argujillo, Villabuena and Morales, from 5 plots that comprise 4 hectares of vineyards belonging to 3 families of suppliers who use traditional wine growing with the company since 1998. They have vase-shaped vines of Tinta de Toro cultivated on deep, gravelly soils "cascajos" with good drainage and varied textures. The grapes ferment with local yeasts in 3000-Kg oak vats. They are aged for 18 months in barrels made of French wood from different origins. 70% in new barrels, 20% in one-use barrels and 10% in 1500-litre foudres.

Tasting notes Pago la Jara

This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
Pago la Jara 2014 is a mature, intense and powerful red wine. A very good vintage that shows all the opulence of this wine with elegance. Balanced on the nose, aromas of ripe black fruit and very refined toasted notes. In the mouth, it keeps all its strength with silkiness and a light freshness. It is the company's treasure.
The 2013 vintage, rated as a very good one, began in a complicated way. In the early spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there were heavy rains, significantly delaying the start of the growth cycle. This resulted in late flowering and therefore later ripening. Before the harvest, there was a considerable amount of rain, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they have produced are less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with a good acidity.

Designation of Origin D.O. Toro

Winery Telmo Rodríguez

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Toro

It is safe to say that Telmo Rodríguez has the reputation of being one of the pioneers and best "driving winemakers", that is, winemakers that travel to different areas to produce wines from the same harvest, using only native varieties from their original regions, apart from paying special attention to the recovery of abandoned vineyards. Currently, Telmo Rodríguez, who enjoys being a winemaker more than an oenologist, is known in the wine industry for being one of the promoters of Spanish winemaking.
