Characteristics of Pago de Valdoneje Roble

Pago de Valdoneje Roble is a red wine produced by the Vinos Valtuille family winery with Mencía, the queen of Bierzo grape varieties.

Vinos Valtuille was founded in 1999 with the intention of producing its own wines inspired by three core values: effort, quality and respect for the land. Located in the town of Valtuillo de Abajo, in the heart of the Camino de Santiago, this newly-built winery presents the character and climate of the wines of the D.O. Bierzo , while combining tradition and innovation.

The winery has 12 hectares of old vineyard owned by the García Alba family. More than 100 plots with varied soils, altitudes and orientations that allow them to select the grape depending on the wine they wish to produce. In the case of Pago de Valdoneje Roble,Marco García, the family’s oenologist, seeks a balance between the fruit of the clayey areas and the power of the high areas. The grapes are picked by hand into 5 kilo boxes, after passing over a selection table.

In the cellar, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation takes place below 28ºC in stainless steel tanks. Pago de Valdoneje Roble undergoes an ageing of between 4 and 6 months in French oak barrels.

Pago de Valdoneje Roble is the result of the concentration of old Mencía vines that result in a fresh wine with its own character, and one that is well worth tasting.

Pago de Valdoneje Roble 2017 gives off red fruit with toasted notes of smoke, liquorice and balsamic touches. On the palate it is juicy, balanced and rounded.

Winery Vinos Valtuille

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
