Characteristics of Pago de Carraovejas

Pago de Carraovejas is one of the most well-known wines from D.O. Ribera del Duero produced by Bodega Pago de Carraovejas.
It is a coupage of Tinto Fino (91%), Cabernet Sauvignon (6%) and Merlot (3%) varieties.
The grapes are grown on an estate owned by the winery, the estates are scattered throughout Ribero del Duero and the grapes are grown with careful supervision from the technical team in the winery.
The Carraovejas estate is situated on the outskirts of Peñafiel, one of the towns with the most viticulture tradition in the Ribera del Duero, composed of limestone clay soils with red loam.
An oceanic climate with low precipitation, very cold in the long and wet winter falling to temperatures of
-10ºC.
The summers are short and very hot, reaching temperatures of 40ºC, however the nights and mornings are fresh.

The harvest is done by hand and the grapes are transported in small vibrating stainless steel trailers, arriving at the winery destemmed, whole and unharmed.

Pago de Carraovejas undergoes a fermentation in small stainless steel deposits and French oak vats with local yeast from their own vineyards.
There is an aging for 12 months in fine grain new and semi-new (3 years old) French and American oak barrels.

Pago de Carraovejas is clarified with natural egg whites and bottled by gravity.
It rests for 12 months in the bottle before it is released onto the market.

A wine that will delight wine lovers with a passage marked by the barrel. Very fine and elegant.

Tasting notes Pago de Carraovejas

After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
Pago de Carraovejas 2015 surprises us with its silky profile in the mouth. In this vintage, which is qualified as a very good one, they have managed to balance maturity and ageing, achieving a great result. The spicy aromas and black fruit perfectly combine with the mid-palate, concentrated, but with a round and polished tannin. Bravo!
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Sight Nice and intense purple red colour with flecks of the same colour. It is bright, lively and has a fine, lightly tinted tear. Nose On the nose it is intense. It has aromas of the aging that little by little give way to ripe red fruit, juicy, succulent and fleshy. A long, pleasant and persistent finish full of roasted nuances. Taste The attack is delicate, elegant and silky, marked by the red fruit which is well matured. A good acidity that is accompanied by mature and polished sensations. Pleasant bitterness with a long and persistent finish.
Sight Nice and intense purple red colour with flecks of the same colour. It is bright, lively and has a fine, lightly tinted tear. Nose On the nose it is intense. It has aromas of the aging that little by little give way to ripe red fruit, juicy, succulent and fleshy. A long, pleasant and persistent finish full of roasted nuances. Taste The attack is delicate, elegant and silky, marked by the red fruit which is well matured. A good acidity that is accompanied by mature and polished sensations. Pleasant bitterness with a long and persistent finish.
Sight Intense cherry color with very high layer purple edges.
Nose High aromatic intensity. Intense nose aromas of black fruit, with sweet scents of vanilla, toffee and balsamic notes. We found some toast, milk and spices nuances.
Taste Very smooth entry, tasty, balanced, long on the palate, pleasant aftertaste and creamy sweet finish. It is elegant, harmonious and persistent. With complex and sensitive feelings, one of the most successful wines of the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with a very high robe and purple reflections. Bright wine with elegant and dense highly coloured tears. Nose Elegant aromatic intensity. The sweet and creamy spicy and toasted notes, the hints of good chocolate and coffee and the intense balsamic aromas give way to fleshy notes of ripe black and red fruit, which keep a perfect and harmonious balance. Taste Very nice and smooth attack, in which this wine coats the mouth with creamy fruity aromas. It has a fleshy and mellow mid palate with a silky and creamy texture. Its perfect balance provides it with a very good acidity. Sweet and elegant tannins and a long and persistent, very nice finish.  A round wine.
Sight Intense purple colour with red and violet trims. Clean and bright wine. Dense tears that dye glass. Nose Very intense and persistent wine with a large burden of red and black fruits accompanied with balsamic notes and spices (nutmeg). Notes of toasted oak, coffee and cocoa, with milky nuances and subtle herbal touch. Taste This Pago de Carraovejas Crianza is soft and fleshy at the same time. It has a velvety, fruity and creamy mid palate with greedy tannins. Correct acidity. Long and persistent finish. A round and very pleasant wine.
