Characteristics of Ònix Clàssic

Onix Clàssic Jove is a red wine from the Priorat produced by Vinicola del Priorat. It is a blend of Mazuelo (50%) and Grenache (50%).

The grapes come from more than 300 plots of vines, the best are selected for the production of Onix Clàssic Jove. The varieties used, Mazuelo and Grenache, are highly adapted to the territory. The floors are licorella (slate) and the harvest is done manually in boxes of 15 kilos. In this way, the grains are not broken and fermented before they should.

The ripening of the grapes is controlled with the use of phenolic ripening parameters. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo a slight skidding process and siphoning in deposits of stainless steel at a 2500 litre capacity.

Onix Clàssic Jove then undergoes an alcoholic fermentation at a temperature of 25 degrees and then 20 days of maceration.

Ultimately, the wine is fermented before it is ready to be marketed.

Vinicola del Priorat is the only cooperative formed by farmers of Priorat which manages all the processes of wine, from cultivation of the vines to final marketing.

It was established in 1991 with the aim of grouping small local cooperatives that already existed.

Tasting notes Ònix Clàssic

Ònix Clàssic 2017 is a young, fresh and fruity red wine. As with every vintage it is jovial, with character and lots of fruit. On the nose the aromas of fresh red fruit stand out, with floral notes over a mineral base note. On the palate it is tasty, very lively and lingering.
We present the new 2016 vintage, characterised by the wettest winterin the last five years. Not only did it rain in winter, but there was also wet weather up until summer arrived, especially inMarch and April. In summer everything changed, and it was one of the driest inhistory, with only 28 litres being recorded between July and October.If we compare the temperatures in 2012 and 2016, the 2016 crophad to endure a much colder winter than in 2012, which turned outto be positive, since the frost cleared the fields ofvine parasites. During the spring, lower temperaturesthan in 2012 were also recorded.Due to all these climatic conditions there was a delay insprouting, which began on March 28th, and which led to a delayin flowering of between three and four weeks.Once the summer arrived, the Priorat got all the luck, sincethe rains disappeared, while in the rest of Europethey were incessant. It was something that nobody expected considering thewinter we’d had. Taking into account the delay insprouting, the harvest started around mid-October on some ofthe estates.Obtaining fresh wines with an extraordinary acidity is dueto this long duration of the grape in the strain that has so characterisedthis vintage.
The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
Sight Dark cherry red with violet hues. Neat and bright, nice tear. Nose Ripe, fruity, red and black fruit aromas. It is expressive and also shows some hints of spice and balsamic notes. Mineral sensations in the background. Taste Wide entrance and fruity. Tasty, with good volume and body. Good acidity and pleasant aftertaste.
Sight Cherry colour with a violent trim and hints of blue. Bright and clean. Nose On the nose it is intensely aromatic: ripe black and red fruits. Spicy notes, herbaceous hints from a Mediterranean forest with balsamic touches. Taste On the palate it is fresh and pleasant, ample and warm in the mouth with tasty flavours. Balanced acidity. Long after taste with a high fruit content marked by retronasal breathing.

Sight Picota cherry colour with violet reflections. Clean and bright. Nose Clean nose, medium-high intensity. Ripe, juicy, appetising red fruit stands out along with lactic notes, strawberry yoghurt and hints of aromatic herbs. Fresh, dynamic and very enjoyable. Taste After a good attack this wine is intensely fruity on the palate. It has a good, refreshing and defined acidity and polished, juicy tannins. Long and persistent finish. A lovely, easy to drink red wine. Excellent value for money.
Sight Dark cherry red colour with violet edges. Clean and bright wine with tears that stain the glass. Nose Great load of fruit with intense and expressive notes of very ripe fleshy red and black fruits, mixed with light spicy notes and subtle balsamic hints. A good minerality is noticed in the background which gains in intensity over the time. Taste Wide and warm attack with very expressive notes of fruit. A full-bodied, bulky Priorat wine with a tasty and silky mid palate, a correct acidity and a good finish with a marked fruity aftertaste.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with violet edges. Bright. Abundant stained tears. Nose The notes of very ripe red and black fruit are intense and very sweet (jam or compoted fruits). They are released on a strong mineral background. Subtle spicy and balsamic touches. Taste Nice attack with a very tasty and warm mid palate. Soft tannins and fair acidity. Long finish which leaves fruity aromas.
Sight Cherry red. Nose On the nose, the aroma is something closed and mineral fruit. Taste Flavor is roasted shows soft tannins and sweet.

    Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
