Red wine. 20 months in French oak barrels. Winery: Palacios Remondo. D.O.Ca. Rioja. (La Rioja) Variety: Garnacha Tinta
D.O.: D.O.Ca. Rioja
Talking about Palacios Remondo is making a reference to its founder José Palacios Remondo, the son of a family involved in viticulture for 150 years. He was the one who planted the selection of traditional varieties of eastern La Rioja, an area that wants to produce quality wines in a short time. Cooperativity prevailed in the area, as well as large amounts destined to complete other wines in La Rioja Alta and La Rioja Alavesa. Also, over the years and with another point of view, he started to teach some of his 8 children to work the land and the winery. He send them to the best oenology and viticulture schools, carrying out work practice and exchanges with the best wineries and in the best winegrowing regions of the world.
History of the winery
The winery was founded by José Palacios Remondo in 1945, in the city of Alfaro, in the famous Rioja Baja, also called eastern Rioja. Over time, some of the children of José Palacios have grown and modernised the facilities of the winery, also leaving their mark on the design of family winery's products. Currently, and after José Palacios passed away in 2000, his children, Chelo in the business management and Álvaro Palacios in the technical management, have contributed to lead the family winery Palacios Remondo. In a few years, they have been able to extract and express the best of the varieties and their landscapes in their current wines.
At present, the winery owns around 110 hectares of vineyards, located to the west of Alfaro, at the foot of the mountain range of Yerga (1100 m), which closes the valley of the Ebro on its southern side. The vineyards are spread throughout Valtomelloso, Valviejo and Vafrío, areas that are part of the property of La Montesa, as well as the nearby sites of Las Mulgas and Quiñón Valmira, which represent the family's most traditional and antique viticulture. The vines are located at a maximum of 550 m above sea level, on rugged soils with clayey-calcareous texture and poor in organic matter. These soils have a petrocalcic background that limits the plants' vigour and also gives wines a certain minerality. Here, they cultivate the Red Grenache, Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano varieties, and 4 hectares of the white Viura in Valltomelloso.
The winery is still in its original location, practically in the centre of Alfaro. It has great hygiene and cleanliness standards, and state-of-the-art technology, equipped with selection tables, stainless steel tanks with temperature control, French oak barrels of the best coopers and a gleaming collection of oval foudres of different sizes and provenances.
Palacios Remondo's work philosophy focuses on land and nature. The natural elements of old and mineral soils, the landscape value of each location, climate factors and its close relationship with the vegetation environment, define the use of a winegrowing process that can reflect the latitudes and orientations, the rocks and slopes, the light and the living elements in its wines. In short, the full identity of each place and region.
Wines are cultivated naturally, with no chemical treatments. In the winery, all wines are made with care, without foreign yeasts nor other chemical agents.
The respect for the land, nature and the local varieties make Palacios Remondo a winery that intends to search for maximum transparency and pureness for its wines.
They are also aware that the winery and its vineyards are located in an area with a Mediterranean climate, with some Atlantic features, where rainfall is scarce, but sunshine hours are estimated at around 2600.
For Palacios Remondo it is evident that in this area, with this winemaking culture and this climate with a distinct Mediterranean influence, the Red Grenache is the queen variety. It is Álvaro Palacios' lucky charm, as it has a long growth cycle that is in line with a more dry and luminous geo-climatic pace.
Wines from the Palacios Remondo winery
Currently, Palacios Remondo has three red wines and one white wine, the Plácet de Valtomelloso, which comes from the 4 hectares of Viura planted in the centre of the vineyard La Montesa, called Valtomelloso. Only 30,000 bottles per harvest are produced. The wine ferments for 10 months in 2000-litre oval oak foudres, where it develops the richness and refinement of an unctuous wine that is the pure expression of its place of origin: the highlands of eastern Rioja. Plácet claims the knowledge and the tradition of this white from La Rioja.
La Vendimia is their young red, born from the youngest vines and from the secular union with other families that provide their fruit. Therefore, it expresses the union of the different areas of Rioja: the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Its personality equally focuses on the Grenache and Tempranillo varieties. These give it a special significance, light and at the same time properly defined, while its short ageing period, 4 months in vats and oak barrels, make up its body and gives it complexity. Álvaro Palacios defines it with a classic concept in Rioja: "second-year wine", and explains that if young wine is good, the next year in the bottle will be even better. It is a very floral, lively and versatile red wine, stimulating, deep and with a slight tannic strength.
La Montesa is one of the flagships of the winery. It is a wine capable of transmitting the harmony of a landscape that extends over 90 hectares of vineyard on clayey-calcareous soils and the conglomerate sediment of the Yerga mountain range, where the Grenache variety (70 %) planted in 1989 expresses the traditional flavour. On the other hand, the Tempranillo and Mazuelo varieties complete the harmony of their ageing between foudres and barrels.
Propiedad Viñas Tradicionales is born from 5 selected vineyards of the Grenache variety, which offer the singularity of the valley of Yerga, and which are distributed in 20 hectares in the sites of Valmira, Valfrío, Las Mulgas, Valviejo and Corral de Serrano. It is aged for 12 months in barrels and foudres. Fresh fruits, strawberries, currants, nectarines and cherries, with a fleshiness and fluidity that invoke its origin in the lower mountain, with chamomile and rosemary flower, and the citrus note of red grapefruit skin.
After years of testing, and as Álvaro Palacios did first in the Priorat with his L'Ermita wine, and then in El Bierzo with La Faraona, he will probably bring out his great Alfaro wine, Valmira, a Grenache varietal from the farm with the same name. We will wait expectantly.
