Founded in 1973, it belongs to the group González Byass since 1982. The passion that the González family has for wine has led them not only to extend the Sherry wine culture all around the world, but also to become a true family of wineries that represents part of the oenological diversity of Spain.
More than 30 years ago, González Byass started a commitment to develop wines with a quality that is reflected with their presence in the important winegrowing areas of Spain.
The first winery that was integrated into the group was, as a matter of fact, Beronia. A year later, in 1983, they were joined by Vilarnau, which has been producing wines and cavas since 1948 protected by D.O. Cava and D.O. Penedés. Following its commitment to the production of quality wine with different origins, González Byass recovered the Tintilla de Rota variety and the tradition of red wines in the province of Cadiz with Finca Moncloa, in Arcos de la Frontera. In 2006 he opened Finca Constancia, a newly-built winery in Otero (Toledo) with 200 hectares of their own vineyards where they make single-vineyard wines. The last addition to the group was Viñas del Vero, in July 2008. This is a leading winery, by volume and quality, of D.O. Somontano, taking over 45% of its production.
History and philosophy of the winery
Bodegas Beronia is located in Ollauri, in the heart of La Rioja Alta. It was opened in 1973 by a group of businessmen, and friends, who are wine and gastronomy lovers. The name of the winery refers to the history of the lands on which it is located, since in the third century BC ("III a.C."), the area known today as La Rioja, was inhabited by the "berones", Celtic warrior people whose first settlements marked the limits of the Riojan region.
Bodegas Beronia has an area of 20 hectares of own vineyards surrounding the winery. However, the technical team controls around 850 hectares, of which 50 are over 60 years old.
All the vineyards are specially selected, and are located within a radius of 10 km around the winery, in the Rioja Alta area: Ollauri, Gimileo, Rodezno and Haro, with Tempranillo crops (which represent 85% of the total vineyard), Graciano, Grenache, Mazuelo and Viura.
Beronia also has some pre-phylloxera vineyards that are over one hundred years old, as well as vineyards planted when the winery was created, more than forty years ago, and new plantations from spring 2011.
All grapes used in the production of wines of Beronia are harvested from vineyards that are carefully selected, plot by plot. Agreements made with more than two hundred winegrowers who provide them are long term and with constant cooperation throughout the year. The technicians control the farms to ensure that the use of fertilisers and phytosanitary products is as less as possible, without any deterioration in the quality of the grapes nor in the health condition. Bodegas Beronia also promotes sustainable agriculture at all levels, as well as environmental protection, so some of the vineyards of Beronia are also classified as organic.
In the winery, in the underground warehouse, with suitable temperature and humidity, they have around 30,000 oak barrels. An important quality factor for Beronia is the average age of the barrels, which is only four years.
95% of the wines of Beronia are red, with long ageing processes in French, American and mixed oak barrels. Therefore, the latter have American oak staves and French oak bottoms, which give the wine a greater complexity of sensations.
Matías Calleja has been the oenologist and Technical Manager at Beronia since the early years of the winery. He has transmitted his personality to the wines he produces, giving them a unique character that represents the so-called "Beronia style". This is why Matías Calleja personally determines which varieties will be used in the coupage for the production of each wine, depending on the ripening conditions and the quality of the grapes yielded each harvest. Another extremely essential thing is the type of oak that will be used for each wine, since this not only affects their taste but also the profile of their tannins, their colour and their texture. All this experimentation allowed Beronia to become a pioneer winery in the use of the mentioned mixed barrels, with American oak staves and French oak bottoms.
Since the beginning, the wines of Beronia have received several prizes and mentions. As an example, we have the one awarded to Beronia Reserva 2010, which has achieved the award for the best wine of La Rioja with the Rioja Trophy at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition. The Beronia Gran Reserva 2007 has also achieved a Regional Trophy at the Decanter Asia Wine Awards. Likewise, the contest Tempranillos al Mundo 2014 awarded the gold medal to Beronia Reserva 2010 and Beronia Tempranillo, Special Production of 2011, and also the Gold Medal to Beronia III a.C. 2011 at the international contest Mundus Vini, with more than 5,000 wines from 149 winemaking regions of the world. All of these awards achieved by Beronia confirm their constant search for the highest quality and their innovative spirit.
Wines from Bodegas Beronia
Bodega Beronia produces a Classic Line of Rioja wines, in addition to a Collection of Monovarietals, an organic red, and the Premium Collection. In its classic line, it commercialises the Beronia Blanco, a young rosé wine made from Viura, the Beronia Rosado, a monovarietal of Tempranillo, the Beronia Crianza, with 90% Tempranillo, 8% Grenache, 2% Mazuelo, and 12 months ageing in mixed barrels. Then they have the Beronia Reserva, with a coupage of 94% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 3% Mazuelo from a selection of the best grapes from older vineyards. In its Beronia Varietales Collection, we have to highlight the Beronia Viura Fermentado en Barrica. The grapes undergo skin-contact maceration without destemming for 18 hours, and after that, the must ferments in French oak barrels at a temperature of 18º to 20º for 20 days, and rests 4 months more in contact with its lees. It is an elegant wine on the nose, standing out for fruit notes such as pear and banana, a subtle wooden background, with aniseed and aromatic herbs nuances; fresh, well balanced, ample and long-lasting.
In La Rioja, Beronia Mazuelo Reserva is a unique wine within its style, because it is made only from Mazuelo and in the reserva category. After a slow fermentation, this wine has remained in American and French oak barrels for 28 months. On the nose it has intense aromas of black fruits and compote fruit, quince on a spicy background, with a palate that has a lively palate and character in the mouth, with a strong fruit compote flavour on a toasted background; full-bodied, fresh and extremely balanced with great persistence. Beronia Graciano focuses on preserving the characteristics of the grapes, so it performs a cold maceration, and then, the alcoholic fermentation is controlled at a moderate temperature to achieve good extraction of colour. It is left in French oak barrels for 6 months. It has flowery aromas, with a strong violet note. It also has chocolate and mint notes on a background of spiced wood; ample, meaty, fresh and with balanced acidity.
Inside this collection, we can also include their Beronia Ecológico, a wine made from 100% Tempranillo from a selection of the best grapes from the oldest vines. It is aged for a minimum of 10 months in mixed French and American oak barrels. On the nose, it has eucalyptus and undergrowth on red fruits; ample, with a pleasant structure that stands out for the freshness of the fruit. It is round and voluminous.
Within the Premium Collection is the Beronia Viñas Viejas , a Tempranillo varietal from a selection of the best grapes from vineyards that are over 40 years old. This wine is aged for 10 months in new French oak barrels. On the nose, it suggests an intensity and complexity, with red fruits and mineral notes that have slight hints of cocoa and toasted almonds. In the mouth, it is ample and meaty, and very fresh and balanced on the mid-palate, lively, engaging, with strong fruit and harmony of sensations.
It is followed by Beronia Selección 198 Barricas, a coupage of 90% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 4% Mazuelo that come from vineyards that are over 60 years old, with an ageing of 24 months in a selection of the best new and mixed barrels. A wine that seduces the nose, with its spicy character and notes of tobacco, with aromas of cloves, rosemary, thyme, cacao and undergrowth, which lead to a black fruit and minty finish. Silky and elegant on the palate. A sweet wine that harmonises its fruity character on the mid-palate where prunes stand out. With spicy flavours, chocolate and touches of black liquorice. Minty sensations and a balanced acidity give it freshness, which accompanies its long-lasting finish.
And finally, we have the Beronia III a.C., a red limited edition wine with a production of only 5,000 bottles and that is only made from excellent vintages, with grapes from old vineyards that are over 60 years old. After the alcoholic fermentation, it macerates and begins its ageing in new French oak barrels. After six months, it is transferred to semi-new barrels until it reaches an ageing of 15 months. It has a seductive and intense nose. Red fruits with mineral and balsamic notes stand out, mixed with mint on a background of chocolate. Very balanced, complex and unctuous on the mid-palate, very rich in nuances: red fruits, chocolate and mint. A lingering wine with a velvety texture. Elegant and harmonious.
