Characteristics of Obalo Joven
Óbalo Joven is a red wine from the D.O La Rioja produced by Óbalo. This wine is made using only Tempranillo grapes, the most famous variety of the region.
The grapes used for Óbalo Joven, which are harvested manually, come from vineyards located near the Sierra Cantabria which are planted at altitudes of between 700-1000 metres. The winery works with a total of 42 hectares of vineyards, 2 of which are owned by the vineyard, while the other 40 hectares are overseen by the winery´s technical team.
The vineyards used to produce this wine are around 25 years old, although a tenth of the wine is slightly younger, at around a decade old. The soils are calcareous clay with a high percentage of limestone. The climate of the Rioja, excellent for wine production, is mainly Mediterranean, but also receives the influence of the cold Atlantic.
After the harvest has been carried out, the grapes to be used are chosen from 2 different selection tables. Following this, they are destemmed and pressed. Once the grapes have undergone fermentation, the must is then incubated and pressed.
Finally, Óbalo Joven is racked in new and used French oak barrels, where the wine is then aged for 3 months following malolactic fermentation.
La Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
