Characteristics of Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador

Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador is a red wine from the Priorat produced by the Família Nin-Ortiz winery. This is in Porrera, one of the richest wine populations in Priorat.

The owners of the winery, Ester Nin and Carlos Ortiz, also are in charge of caring for the vineyards of the known wine Clos Erasmus.

Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador is a blend of Grenache and Carignan. The grapes come from old vines about 90 years of age grown following biodynamic organic farming methods. The vineyards are planted on "costers", hillsides with great inclines.

The development of Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador begins with a steep one month maceration of the grape, after stripping.

Subsequently, a must fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature. Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador is aged for one year and two months in French oak barrels.

It is a wine of very limited production; a jewel of Priorat.

Tasting notes Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador

The Priorat region was marked by heavy drought and heat. Following an autumn and winter with normal temperatures and rainfall, spring began with an abnormal drought and high temperatures. Flowering was successful, occurring before the expected date, but the rains didn’t come. During the summer the high temperatures continued, and the lack of rainfall resulted in the earliest harvest in history. In general, the wines of this vintage are noted for their concentration, being less pronounced in wines produced with local varieties such as Grenache or Cariñena. Perfect for enjoying young, and with a medium aging capacity.
Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador 2016 is a structured red wine with character and elegance. A great vintage that reveals all the character of this vineyard clearly and sincerely, and where the varieties are clearly expressed. The aromas of ripe white fruit stand out, with notes of flowers and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is full and mineral, and with a freshness that makes it highly lingering.
The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
Sight A purplish cherry colour. Full robe, clean and bright. Dark, saturated red wine. Abundant tear. Nose Touches of black fruit. Undertones of blackberry with reminiscences of blackcurrant and cranberry. Taste Good acidity and great elegance. Full-bodied with enjoyable mature tannins. Structured, with a balanced finish.
Sight Violet colour, high, well covered layer. Clean, bright and fine with abundant tears. Nose Soft notes of black fruits, blackberries, currants with hints of blueberries. Taste The palate has a pronounced acidity, it is elegant, with ripe tannins despite its youth. Step is balanced, structured.
Sight Cherry red colour with ruby edge. Clean and bright. It has tear with a uniform falling. Nose Intense, ripe, defined, concentrated and very elegant nose. It shows very ripe black fruit together with a characteristic minerality. Balsamic and floral notes, aromatic herbs, fine spices and subtle wooden hints round up the whole and enhance the fruit. Taste In the mouth, it is pleasant, fine and balanced and has the same fruit found in the nose. It is also structured and has a great acidity which freshens it and gives depth and definition, with velvety and very integrated tannins. Long and persistent finish. It is tasty, round and appetising. Absolutely recommendable.

Designation of Origin D.O.Q. Priorat

Winery Ester Nin

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.

Imágenes y situación D.O.Q. Priorat

Ester Nin has quickly become one of the key names in Priorat. She started with Mas Martinet and Clos Erasmus, which is where she was first awarded 100 Parker points for a Spanish wine. From there she started her own project, giving the winery her own name. Her first wine, Nit de Nin, exploded onto the market, scoring 98 Parker points for her first vintage. Then came the rest: a whole collection of biodynamic wines with the ability to showcase the full strength and essence of Priorat, and each vintage touched by Parker's magic wand. These wines have found themselves a comfortable position among Parker’s highest rated Spanish wines.
