Characteristics of Musikanto
Musikanto is a rosé wine produced in the D.O. Alicante by Bernabe Navarro in Villena, Alicante.
The grapes used for this wine come from the Casa Balaguer estate which i situated between 700 – 730 metres above sea level in the town of Villena, Alicante. The vineyards grow on calcareous soils present with many pebbles. The vineyards are old, between 40 and 60 years old, and are cultivated on low bush vines, treated with short pruning and marked by dry-farming crops. The vineyards are cultivated and worked organically, avoiding the use of herbicides and synthetic products.
Musikanto is made exclusively with the Garnacha variety as if it were a white wine, macerating up until the point of pressing. Therefore this wine has a pale pink colour and is left to ferment with indigenous yeasts in large clay earthenware jars. The wine is then left to age for four months in the same jars.
There is no doubt that the Monastrell grape variety has become a fashionable grape variety. This region is home to over half a dozen cooperatives, which have been at the forefront of a wine revolution, making wines that are respectful to the local culture the area, cultivating vines with care, selecting only the best fruit and producing wines that faithfully express character of the terroir. These wines are easy to identify, due to the fact the estate or vineyard from which they came from is usually printed on their label. Also, their authenticity and quality can be guaranteed by the DO Alicante, which not only certifies the farms, but also everything posted on the wines labeling.
