Characteristics of Muga Crianza

Muga Crianza is a red wine from Rioja, made by Bodegas Muga. This winery has a winemaking tradition of over 80 years in Haro (La Rioja Alta), the city with the highest concentration of wineries in the world.

Muga Rioja Crianza is a true blend made with 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo 7% and 3% of Graciano, all typical varieties of Rioja.

The grapes come from vines planted in terraces on tertiary calcareous clay.

For its preparation, Muga Crianza undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeast in oak tanks. Subsequently it is aged for 24 months in barrels made in the winery itself.

Finally, before bottling, Muga Crianza is clarified with natural egg and once bottled, rests for 12 months.

Tasting notes Muga Crianza

Muga Crianza 2015 is a fleshy, complex and elegant red wine. In this vintage it is already rounded from the beginning. On the nose, the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, with elegant smoky notes of the aging. On the palate it is silky and pleasant, with a fresh and lingering finish.
It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
This vintage was marked by a very rainy and cold spring just at the time of the growth cycle. This fact caused it to ripen unevenly and with a certain delay. Thanks to a fairly dry September and October, the grapes that ripened with a certain delay were harvested in a selective manner. A complicated vintage, but with good results since there was an exhaustive selection of the grapes. A good balance between concentration and acidity in their youth define the wines from this vintage.
A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.
Sight Intense cherry red, with purple hues and an abundant tear. Nose The nose is dominated by black and red fruit. Blackberry, currants and plum. Leather with fine floral notes, lightly toasted flavours and spices appear. Black pepper, cloves, cocoa, toast. Taste Tasty entry into the mouth. Predominant ripe fruit with memories of aging. Vanilla and cream. Fleshy, broad, balanced and structured. With excellent acidity and gentle tannins. Aftertaste is long and very persistent.
Sight Dark and intense cherry colour with ruby red edges and purple reflections. Clean and very bright. It has a medium robe and abundant tears. Nose High intensity nasal aromas, dominated by intense notes of ripe red and black fruit that gives way to aromatic floral notes and some emerging toasted aromas. When it opens up, the wine gains in complexity and the notes of fruit get mixed with nice spicy touches, more expressive toasted notes, balsamic touches and hints of leather, coffee and cacao. Taste This red wine shows a long, tasty and fleshy mid palate with dominant notes of ripe fruit on an intense background of notes provided during the ageing wrapped in creamy aromas of vanilla. A balanced and structured wine. Excellent acidity and very pleasant and integrated tannins. Long and very persistent finish.

Sight Intense cherry colour with maroon edges. Very bright wine with good tears. Nose Elegant and intense aromas. The toasted and roasted notes gain power on first nosing, over the aromas of ripe red and black fruit. When it opens up, the aromas are balanced and some spicy, liquorice, leather, mocha and chocolate notes are also felt along with subtle balsamic and mineral touches. Taste Very strong and voluminous attack and a tasty, nice, meaty and fresh mid palate. The notes of fruit dominate on the wooden aromas since the notes of juicy and ripe black fruit are more powerful. Noble and well integrated tannins are also felt and although they are not unpleasant they still need to round out a little more. Long and persistent finish which leaves fruity and spicy sensations. Very fine, elegant and balanced wine from La Rioja.
Sight Very bright, pure ruby colour. Nose Red-berry aromas which evolve towards toasted, charred-oak and coffee nuances. Taste Balanced on the palate. A deep, intense, flavoursome wine. The fruit, previously pure finesse, now becomes potent. An elegant, persistent finish.

Muga is one of those few wineries in Rioja that has managed to combine the most absolute family tradition with a renewed vision of the future. This has allowed them to maintain the unique character and personality of their wines. In addition, it is one of the few wineries in La Rioja that uses oak wood from its own cooperage in all the stages of the production and the ageing processes. An exemplary winery, and one of the most prestigious ones in La Rioja. Since the very beginning, harvest after harvest, it makes wine with the family seal: “Muga style”.
