Characteristics of Moncerbal

Moncerbal is a red wine produced by the Bodegas Descendientes de J Palacios, in Villafranca del Bierzo, León. The winery was founded by Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo back in 1999, who fell for and saw in the potential in the region and the native Mencía variety.

Moncerbal is a ‘vino de paraje’, i.e taken from a single vineyard, situated in Villa de Corullón. The vineyard is home to slate, quartz and marble soils. The plot is south-east facing at an altitude of 700 metres, on steep slopes. The area is also home to a continental climate with strong atlantic influences. The vineyard is cultivated following the principles of biodynamic agriculture.

The vinification process is carried out using artisan methods, in open wooden vats, the grapes and must are subtly pressed, together with indigenous yeasts. Maceration is then left to take place for 35 days. Maceration is then takes place for 35days, before being decanted into small French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation is carried out as well as the ageing process.

Moncerbal represents another plot in Corullón, another another face in which the concentration provided by the soil is predominate, yet without losing the finesse that is provided by the Atlantic climate and the vibration of the old vines.

Tasting notes Moncerbal

This place on the slopes of Corullón is different because it has the most mineral soil of all the region.  This results in a much greater complexity and minerality, that is conspicuous by the violets that are characteristic of cold areas in France and white flower aromas.  It has a medium body on the palate and a sharp, not rounded structure which gives the wine an extraordinary personality.
The 2015 vintage was characterised by low rainfall. The lack of water throughout the year brought the vegetative cycle of the vine forward and it was not until days before the harvest that it started to rain considerably. This caused the grape to hydrate and lead to a somewhat fresher vintage than what it initially seemed. The continental character that this vintage looked like it was going to have was mitigated by the rain before the harvest, balancing the phenolic ripeness, qualifying the vintage as excellent. The wines of this vintage have an excellent balance between structure, acidity and texture in the mouth. A vintage that can age perfectly.
The 2013 vintage was characterised by the influence of the Atlantic climate. Autumn and winter were the typical ones of El Bierzo, with abundant rainfall and low temperatures. Spring came in the same way, with some hail that destroyed crops in some places and lead to the delay in flowering. Summer did not make much of an appearance either, with low temperatures, ripening and the growth cycle were quite slow. The harvest date was delayed by 3 weeks. The wines of this vintage are characterised by a thin profile. The Atlantic climate left its mark on these lighter wines with a marked acidity. Ready to be stored.
Sight Beautiful cherry red colour with violet reflections. Medium-high robe, very bright. Thin and coloured tears show on the glass. Nose Clean, highly intense, complex nose, full of nuances in perfect harmony with eachother. Ripe red and black fruits, pleasant floral notes, spiced notes and pleasant toasted hints from fine woods. Balsamic, mineral and extremely tasty. Taste Both powerful and delicate at the same time. Good attack, long and tasty on the palate with a high concentration of fruit. Spicy, again very balsamic, with fine tannins and a great acidity, which together with some notes of alcohol provide freshness and a long, very persistent and extremely fruity finish  leaving smoked aromas at retro-olfaction.

The harmony is caused due to the ripe red and black fruits, pleasant floral notes, spiced notes and pleasant toasted hints from fine woods. It is balsamic, mineral and extremely tasty. Taste In the mouth, it is powerful and delicate at the same time. Good attack and long and tasty mid-palate, with a great load of fruit. It is also spiced and once again, very balsamic, with a fine and pleasant tannic sensation and a great acidity, which together with some notes of alcohol provide freshness and a long and very persistent and extremely fruity finish which leaves smoked aromas at retro-olfaction.

Production area D.O. Bierzo

Winery Descendientes de J. Palacios

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.

To talk of Descendientes de J. Palacios is to talk about Ricardo Perez and his uncle Álvaro Palacios, both passionate about simplifying the treatment of the vineyards and the wine production process, leading them to become pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture. The winery currently boasts 30 hectares of vineyards spread over 200 different plots, home to old vines and steep soils, which combines the organic with the immaterial in the constant search for the definition and purity of their wines.
