Characteristics of Mengoba Las Botas

Mengoba Las Botas is a white wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba in Carracedelo, Bierzo, without denomination of origin.

 

Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba is a winery that was founded in 2007 by the renowned oenologist Gregory Pérez. After his first steps in France (Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and especially in Château Cos d'Estournel), his family roots —and a little encouragement from his friends— brought him to Spain, more specifically to El Bierzo.

Gregory Pérez's philosophy is based on the respect and the sustainability of the vine, applying non-aggressive treatments, without herbicides, working with local varieties with low yield, learning about the soils and making wine with traditional methods.

The vines are planted on steep hills above 600 metres of altitude, facing South, and ventilated by constant streams of air. The soil is formed by a mixture of clays and decomposing slate, within a woodland surrounding and with great natural diversity.

The climate in this area is mild with a lot of humidity. The average annual temperature is 12.3ºC. The minimum temperature is 3.6ºC in the winter and the maximum 23.6ºC during the warmest months in the summer.

 

Mengoba Las Botas is a wine made from Godello, from small plots with vines that are over 70 years old, planted in vase-shape on clayey-calcareous soils, with rocks and slate. They are located in the municipalities of Carracedo, Espanillo, Valtuille and Villafranca in El Bierzo.

Harvesting is carried out manually, selecting the grapes in the vineyard. Once the grapes are destemmed and crushed, they go through pre-fermentation maceration. Then, they are poured into two Manzanilla butts that are over 150 years old, where the wine ferments with local yeasts. The ageing takes place for 10 months on its fine lees, in the same Manzanilla butts. Before bottling, the wine is stabilised, clarified and slightly filtered.

 

Mengoba Las Botas is a mature, unctuous and dry wine. Only 500 bottles of this rare wine are produced. It blends the freshness and the rusticity of the northern wines in an original way, with the intensity and the character of the wines from the south.
